  • 97: Sup Doc Presents The Organist Penelope Spheeris Interview
This is a bonus Sup Doc mini-episode brought to you by our friends at THE ORGANIST podcast, an arts and culture show produced by McSweeney's and KCRW. They interview artists, and writers, musicians, philosophers, actors, and wild cards like cyborgs and retired tennis coaches.
On this latest season of the Organist, some interview segments had to do with documentaries, so they offered to let us share these segments with you!
This first episode of the season focuses on "The Voice of God" so we hear about Penelope Spheeris and her partner SIN. Penelope is the director of Wayne's World, but more importantly to us she made the epic punk/metal/Los Angeles documentary series The Decline of Western Civilization Parts 1-3. Decline 3 chronicles the lives of L.A.’s homeless gutter punks, and she met SIN during its filming. He's been struggling with mental illness and voices in his head, which are described in this segment.
THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION box set is available on Shout Factory.
This segment was recorded by David Weinberg and produced by Myke Dodge Weiskopf, Jenny Ament, Ross Simonini, and Andrew Leland for the Organist. Special Thanks to Ben Bush for setting up this epic crossover!

  • 96 - LIVE: UNITED STATES OF DETROIT w director Tylor Norwood and comedian Karinda Dobbins

This episode of Sup Doc we talk about the documentary The United States of Detroit. We're offering our listeners an exclusive peek at this film that has only been screening at festivals; email us at supdocpodcast AT gmail with the subject line "Detroit" and we'll send you a link. Watching the film will help you follow this conversation, or you may want to see the film after hearing this episode.

This panel was recorded live in April 2018 at the New Parkway Theater in Oakland. The film focuses on a few Detroiters, like Pastor Barry, that are making positive street level impacts in a city famous for its negative headlines.

Even with it’s heavy subject matter we had a fun, funny and informative panel with the director Tylor Norwood and Oakland comedian Karinda Dobbins. We also end with a Q&A session from the audience.

United States of Detroit will be screening in Washington, DC throughout Sept at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, check their website for details.

Special thanks to Ben Sinclair and Skydojo for organizing this event and the New Parkway in Downtown Oakland for hosting us.

  • 95 - LIFE 2.0 w Shelly Paul and Rana May

George brings his recording gear on vacation to the Twin Cities this muggy summer and meets up with comedians Rana May and Shelly Paul to discuss the Second Life documentary Life 2.0, streaming on Netflix. We have a lot of opinions while recapping the three main storylines of this 2010 technophobia doc from director Jason Spingarn-Koff (Oscar winner for Icarus).

We also learn a little bit about why Rana and Shelly are not the same person, ask whether or not George is a troll, and find out the most virtuous way to get bed bugs.

  • 93 - LIVE: FREAKS AND GEEKS THE DOCUMENTARY w director Brent Hodge, comedians Kelly Anneken and David Klein

This was a live panel Friday June 8th during the 17th Annual San Francisco Docfest at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco. Freaks and Geeks - The Documentary, is currently airing on A&E. We spoke with director Brent Hodge and SF comedians Kelly Anneken and David Klein.

Freaks and Geeks The Documentary is a loving portrayal of Paul Feig’s creation and all the stars that came out of it. Freaks and Geeks heralded a new generation in comedy with actors like Seth Rogen, Martin Starr, Linda Cardellini, and Jason Segel. There’s even interviews with the programmers of NBC and the singer of Styx!

This was a crazy night in the mission because we recorded immediately after the Warriors won!

Special thanks to DocFest SF Indie Fest staff, and The Roxie staff.
