William Badgley has made two music documentaries - Kill All Redneck Pricks: A Documentary Film about a Band Called KARP and Here To Be Heard: The Story of the Slits.
Both bands were hugely influential, in vastly different ways for different generations. KARP has a small but mighty cult following, especially for the ‘90s Pacific Northwest, the scene that Badgley grew up in.
The Slits were a wild band of young women in the first wave of UK punk. ‘
they broke up in the early 80s, then reformed with 2 principal members in the oughts and kept touring until the death of singer Ari Up in 2010
Badgley is wrapping up his documentary about Don Letts, the crucial link between London’s punk and reggae subcultures who is an archivist and filmmaker in his own right (and former manager of The Slits). I was able to catch an in-progress cut of the Letts film, Rebel Dread, at the Echo Park Film Center - so there’s some talk about that version which will be pretty different by the time of an official release.

Restrepo is a 2010 American documentary film about the Afghanistan war, directed by American journalist Sebastian Junger and British photojournalist Tim Hetherington.
The film explores the year that Junger and Hetherington spent in Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair. The 2nd Platoon is depicted defending the outpost (OP) named after a platoon medic who was killed earlier in the campaign, PFC Juan Sebastián Restrepo, a Colombian-born naturalized U.S. citizen.
Jeff Dean is a San Francisco-based comedian, writer, and actor originally from Reno, Nevada. Over the years, he’s become a staple in the Bay Area Stand Up comedy scene. He currently runs two weekly comedy showcases, The Fun Stuff at The Laundry in San Francisco, and Double Standard Comedy Night at Double Standard Brewery in Oakland.
If documentaries are meant to change hearts and minds, that’s exactly what Sebastian Junger’s “Restrepo” has done for Jeff. Since seeing this doc, Jeff has grown a deep empathy for our nation’s veterans, and decided to produce benefit comedy shows raising money for non-profits benefiting veterans experiencing homelessness. This partnership lead a much bigger life change, as he switched careers, quitting sales to join a non-profit providing direct service to people experiencing homelessness. Jeff’s life has changed quite a bit, and while there were many factors that lead to these decisions, none of them would have been made without the decision to watch “Restrepo” along with the follow up documentary “Korengal”.

On episode 101 co-host Paco Romane recaps the documentary Finders Keepers with comedian Chris Storin the host of News Dick and co-host of the That's That podcast. Paco and Chris have a fun talk as they also get into comedy, music and even uncover an unexpected surprise!
Finders Keepers is about Amputee John Wood who finds himself in a stranger-than-fiction battle to reclaim his mummified leg from business man Shannon Whisnant, who found it in a grill that he bought at an auction. “Finders Keepers” is a frequently hilarious, sometimes sad but ultimately touching look into the a legal battle between two men, each of whom lays claim to a severed human foot.
My guest Chris Storin can be seen opening for headliners like Felipe Esparza and Dave Chappelle as well as doing his own strong headlining sets. He can be heard on the podcast That’s That and his YouTube show News Dick.

George spoke with Eric Steuer about one of his favorite docs, EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP (2010)
The only film credited to Banksy, Exit Through The Gift Shop tells the story of Thierry Guetta, a self-taught street artist/documentarian who ends up becoming the subject of the film. It has to be seen to be believed, and even then there’s a lot that is unbelievable, as befits a prankster like Banksy. Is Thierry aka Mr. Brainwash real or a long con? We get into the theories and the comedy of the art world.
Eric Steuer works with artists, media companies, technology developers, and cultural institutions on the use of Creative Commons licenses and CC-licensed content. Before joining CC, Eric was an editor for Wired magazine, where he is currently a correspondent, covering the intersection of technology and popular culture. As a musician he’s released a bunch of recordings and remixes, the most recent being the Dos Feeliz “Most Realest” EP(Plug Research) and Not The 1s “Your Man Is Garbage” single.
Reddit AMA from someone who worked for Mr. Brainwash.

We discuss Michael Moore’s latest documentary Fahrenheit 11/9 with journalist, activist, and comedian Francesca Fiorentini. Francesca has been at SF Sketchfest and the Comedy Comedy Festival, and appears at clubs throughout California. She was the host and producer of Newsbroke, the political comedy web series for AJ+, so we’re stoked to talk about the looming influence of Michael Moore and the intersection of comedy and reporting.
While the trailer for Fahrenheit 11/9 looks like an epic Donald Trump takedown, he's really only in it about a quarter of the film. Moore also takes on the media, the Electoral College, and the ongoing water crisis in his hometown of Flint, Mich. There are bright spots along the way like interviews with upcoming candidates in the midterms like Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, and a generational shift in the Parkland activists. It's in theaters now.

This is a bonus Sup Doc mini-episode brought to you by our friends at THE ORGANIST podcast, an arts and culture show produced by McSweeney's and KCRW. They interview artists, and writers, musicians, philosophers, actors, and wild cards like cyborgs and retired tennis coaches.
On this latest season of the Organist, some interview segments had to do with documentaries, so they offered to let us share these segments with you!
This first episode of the season focuses on "The Voice of God" so we hear about Penelope Spheeris and her partner SIN. Penelope is the director of Wayne's World, but more importantly to us she made the epic punk/metal/Los Angeles documentary series The Decline of Western Civilization Parts 1-3. Decline 3 chronicles the lives of L.A.’s homeless gutter punks, and she met SIN during its filming. He's been struggling with mental illness and voices in his head, which are described in this segment.
THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION box set is available on Shout Factory.
This segment was recorded by David Weinberg and produced by Myke Dodge Weiskopf, Jenny Ament, Ross Simonini, and Andrew Leland for the Organist. Special Thanks to Ben Bush for setting up this epic crossover!
