Paco can't quite get into Bob Dylan although our guest has tried to turn him on to the canon. Comedian Tony Camin joins the Sup Doc gang to provide a Dylan fan's insight into the obtuse Netflix concoction Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese (2019).
Netflix describes it as “part concert film, part fever dream” and an “alchemic mix of fact and fantasy.”
“Rolling Thunder Revue” is an engaging but disorganized and long-winded account of the time in 1975 that Bob Dylan convened a vagabond caravan of musicians, poets, reporters, photographers, money men, and hangers-on to tour the United States in the lead-up to the country’s Bicentennial celebration. The tour was a bust financially and in terms of cultural impact. Nevertheless, the Rolling Thunder Revue rejuvenated Dylan as a musician, in the manner of Elvis Presley’s 1968 “comeback” special. And it generated enormous amounts of tour footage, some of which is reproduced here, within a highly conceptual framework, by Scorsese.
Our guest Tony Camin has appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Real Time with Bill Maher, and lots of others that have been cancelled. He’s has performed at The Just For Laughs festival in Montreal as well as The HBO US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, as well as the Melbourne Comedy festival in Australia. Tony has written for programs on NBC, VH1, and Comedy Central. In addition to being co-creator/ performer of “The Marijuana-Logues”, he can also be seen as a correspondent for “The Media Project”, on IFC, and was a recent contestant on NBC’s Last Comic Standing.

On episode 118 George is joined all the way from Boston by director Ian McFarland. They discuss Ian's start in documentary, playing bass in punk bands of his own, and crafting a true story of friendship and chosen family out of three decades of hardcore punk history.
Vinnie Stigma and Roger Miret have been the longest serving members of foundational New York Hardcore band Agnostic Front. The band goes from sharing an Ed Koch-era Lower East Side squat to international cult acclaim. 60-something Stigma (birth name Capuccio) longs for an older way of life, pre-Giuliani gentrification, while being something of a grown-up kid. Miret has become a suburban Arizona family man, but has a lot of demons that are revealed throughout the film. How does one age gracefully, or at all, in the mosh pit of midlife? While many music docs follow a familiar talking head arc, McFarland has more to say about belonging, male bonding, and identity.

We conclude our Mayhem Series of True Crime documentaries with a recap of the 2017 documentary LONG SHOT by Jacob LaMendola (streaming on Netflix).
It’s the story of Juan Catalan who was accused of the execution style murder of 16 year old Martha Puebla in Los Angeles. Catalan was up for the death penalty but his dedicated lawyer hunted for his only alibi that would exonerate him - video footage from a Dodgers game.
Our guest is Andrew Dalton who has been a reporter for 16 years at the Associated Press. He has written about murder, wildfires, murder, politics, busted water mains, murder, celebrity deaths, and the occasional murder. He currently covers the intersection of entertainment and courts from the Los Angeles bureau of the ancient and venerable news outlet. An ethnic Mormon, he was raised in Utah and New Mexico, went to college in Santa Cruz and now lives with his wife and three kids in South Pasadena just a few miles from Dodger Stadium, where he regularly attends games, but only for the alibi.

For our Mayhem Series of True Crime documentaries we recap the 2015 documentary Amanda Knox on Netflix.
Amanda Knox was a year old American student studying abroad in Italy. One morning in November 2007 her roommate Meredith Kercher was found brutally murdered in their home. The small Italian town of Perugia became a media feeding ground for morbid details about Meredith, Amanda, and Amanda’s boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito. Amanda and Raffaele were thrown in prison for four years for a murder they were ultimately acquitted of.
Curiously enough, it was just reported that Amanda Knox is going back to Italy for the first time since her arrest to participate in a Innocence Project conference.
Our guest Sarah Enni is an author, podcaster, and journalist in Los Angeles. Her debut young adult novel, Tell Me Everything, is out now. She hosts the First Draft podcast, where she talks shop with other storytellers. And she went to the same college as Amanda Knox!

Our Mayhem True Crime series continues with the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest directed by Erin Lee Carr.
In July 2016, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the brutal stabbing death of her mother, Dee Dee. Gypsy, then 24, was arguably the biggest victim of all, held hostage by her mother since she was a young child – a casualty of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Gypsy’s plan to kill Dee Dee was a last-ditch attempt to flee this abuse and her partner-in-crime is doing life.
Not only is there this documentary but America is abuzz about the hit Hulu series based on this case, The Act starring Patricia Arquette as Dee Dee and Joey King as Gypsy.

The first episode in our month long MAYHEM series were we cover True Crime documentaries every Monday in May! It also marks four years since we began Sup Doc back in good ol' 2015.
Today's documentary is The Legend of Cocaine Island (Theo Love 2019). A lazy wish-fullfilment DIY rags-to-riches story that is more rags than riches. Of course it goes down in the state that gave us every sharable bonkers story that starts with “A Florida Man.” Cocaine Island centers around Robert Hyden who was on top of the world as a Florida businessman before the recession hit. He went from living in a mansion to a double wide no bigger than what used to be his garage. As he was looking at the bad hand life had dealt him, he heard a great urban legend repeated. There was a guy walking the beach in Puerto Rico one day and he saw a bag floating in the shallow water. He brought it in to shore and found millions of dollars in cocaine. Basically, there was a buried treasure of millions of dollars in drugs just waiting for someone to find it. And that’s what he set out to do.
Comedian Chris Riggins has taken the art of stand up comedy and stands out amongst a sea of other talented artists. From producing unique shows such as the Outdoor Comedy Club, opening for Dave Chappelle his first time on stage, to featuring and headlining at major clubs and colleges throughout the United States, the sky is truly the limit for Chris. While a unique take on growing up in the Bay Area and finding humor in the struggle are the centerpiece of Chris’ act, he is relatable to people from all walks of life.
If you haven’t seen The Legend of Cocaine Island there are some spoilers in this episode.

Today is our Earth Day special as we recap BEHIND THE CURVE, Daniel J. Clark’s look behind-the-curtain of the Flat Earth movement, currently streaming on Netflix. Clark follows the highly-online self-appointed flat earth conspiracists, who may just be misguided scientists in search of like-minded souls. But there’s plenty of unintentional comedy on this trail to blowing the globe cult wide open.
Our guest is comedian Sean Keane. Sean has written for Comedy Central's Another Period, TruTV's Billy On The Street, and produced The Imaginary Radio Program for Seeso. In 2014, the San Francisco Bay Guardian named Sean an "Outstanding Local Discovery," and then promptly went out of business.

Paco and George are joined by comedian Sara DeForest to recap Alex Gibney’s HBO documentary THE INVENTOR: Out For Blood In Silicon Valley. It's the story of Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes, the low-talking, non-blinking CEO that promised to revolutionize blood testing. Elizabeth Holmes became the world's youngest self-made billionaire and was heralded as the next Steve Jobs until a huge fraud scandal lead to the dissolution of her multibillion-dollar company.
Our guest is San Francisco comic Sara DeForest, a marketing consultant and writer who has her own trajectory in the tech industry and shares a hilarious Elizabeth Holmes anecdote. Sara also writes for the sketch groups Basement Party and End Games.
We get to know Sara and play Cast This Doc and Doc Pitch.
