Sup Doc: A Documentary Podcast

Paco and George are joined by comedian Sara DeForest to recap Alex Gibney’s HBO documentary THE INVENTOR: Out For Blood In Silicon Valley. It's the story of Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes, the low-talking, non-blinking CEO that promised to revolutionize blood testing. Elizabeth Holmes became the world's youngest self-made billionaire and was heralded as the next Steve Jobs until a huge fraud scandal lead to the dissolution of her multibillion-dollar company.

Our guest is San Francisco comic Sara DeForest, a marketing consultant and writer who has her own trajectory in the tech industry and shares a hilarious Elizabeth Holmes anecdote. Sara also writes for the sketch groups Basement Party and End Games.

We get to know Sara and play Cast This Doc and Doc Pitch.

A SUP DOC EXCLUSiVE INTERVIEW!

Today we talk about the shocking documentary P is For Party with Frankie Peterson the maverick documentary filmmaker. This Sup Doc exclusive was put together when Peterson approached us about his access to the infamous "Pee Tape" referred to in the Steele Dossier, suspiciously left out of the Mueller Report.

"Dedicated." "Unstoppable." "On YouTube."

All of these phrases have been used to describe our guest, documentarian Frankie Peterson. Whether you've seen such seminal work as The Guilders, Sub Mission, Well Actually, or just have a cousin who swears by them, there is no other filmmaker that comes close to Peterson.

Mr. Peterson demanded we meet at a secret location, which turned out to be a co-working space because we still needed the WiFi.

What happens next changes everything...

We recap Dan Reed’s two part HBO Documentary LEAVING NEVERLAND, a harrowing tale of James Safechuck and Wade Robson coming to terms with being abused as children by their hero, Michael Jackson.

We should add “allegedly abused”; it’s part of the complicated story that emerges over this four hour watch, which is potentially triggering in the graphic descriptions of its subject matter.

But we’re here to talk through it in our usual Sup Doc recap style.

Our guest is comedian Chris Martin (not the other guy), who’s television credits include BBC3 shows Euro’s Most Amazing Moments, Most Annoying People, and World Cup’s Most Shocking Moments. Chris has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe and all over the UK, US, and Australia.

Paco is joined by Bay Area comedian Hayley Beacon to recap the bizarro '70s kidnapping documentary Abducted In Plain Sight.

*Trigger Warnings and Spoiler Alerts abound.*

Jan Broberg said she was “groomed” by her kidnapper to believe UFOs and extra-terrestrial life were a plausible possibility.

If truth is stranger than fiction it doesn’t get stranger than this hit true crime documentary Abducted In Plain Sight (originally released in 2017 as Forever B). On October 17, 1974, 12 year old Jan Broberg was kidnapped by her next-door neighbor and parents’ best friend B. Never trust someone that goes by a letter. Abducted In Plain Sight is a true story of the Brobergs; an Idaho family who fell under the spell of a sociopathic neighbor with his eyes set on their twelve-year-old daughter. Abducted has everything: desire, deceit, faith and forgiveness. Plus handjobs, aliens and the CIA.

Their troubling admissions reveal epic failures and untold personal dramas that point to the biggest tragedy of all — that these crimes could have been prevented.

Our guest is comedian Hayley Beacon. Hayley is a Bay Area native and has been a selected performer across the country at Pittsburg Comedy Festival, Blue Whale, Motor City Comedy Fest, SF Sketchfest and has been a guest on the Las Cultaristas podcast. If you’re into defensive millennial material, cliche sassiness and pop-sociology references, you’ll love her. If not you – your Berniecrat aunt probably will.

Today we're talking Theory of Obscurity: A Film About the Residents, directed by Don Hardy Jr. This 2015 film peels back some of the mysterious layers surrounding the San Francisco experimental music entity that has been churning out bizarre and uncompromising albums for over 40 years. Along the way there are talking head interviews with Les Claypool, Penn Jillette, Matt Groening, and (probably) some Residents.

Our guest is Conan Neutron, a musician and scene organizer behind Victory and Associates, Mount Vicious, and his most recent project Conan Neutron & The Secret Friends (with Dale Crover of Melvins on drums). We discuss his love for the world-making aspects of The Residents and finding a home in weird music.

You can stream Theory of Obscurity on Amazon.

On this episode we discuss the phenomenon of battling Fyre Festival documentaries. We concentrate more on FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (Netflix) than Fyre Fraud (Hulu), but you don't really have to watch either to follow along. Our guest is Andrew Ti (Yo, Is This Racist?, Problematic with Moshe Kasher) and we break down antiheroes with white privilege, scammer culture, and how Chris Smith bungled this whole thing by working with FuckJerry.

Recorded Jan 12th at PianoFight for San Francisco Sketchfest.

Our very first Sup Doc Documentary Quiz Show was standing room only! Our esteemed guests and comedians Alex Falcone (Voted Portland's Funniest Person 2018), Kate Willett (Netflix, Jim Jefferies Show), Mike Drucker (The Tonight Show, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee), and Molly Sanchez ( Failure to Launch, Red All Over: A Handmaid’s Tale Recap) were hilarious, smart and ready for some documentary trivia!

Find out which of the two teams: Making of a Loiterer (Kate Willett and Alex Falcone) or Bowling for Quizumbine (Mike Drucker and Molly Sanchez) walked away with the grand prize - George's Netflix password! There was audience voting and much roasting and ribbing. Thank you to our guests and Sketchfest and PianoFight and the powerpoint skills of producer Will Scovill.

Game play starts around 22:00
