Continuing our ongoing Ranking Wes Craven series is another first time viewing for both of us in the form of The Serpent and the Rainbow. Perhaps the least talked about horror film in Wes Craven’s entire filmography; we discuss the strange and peculiar decisions made in this film as we approach the end of Craven’s 80’s films very soon. Also we of course add it to our overall ranking which now stands at a whopping 12 films. Elsewhere this week; Alex Garland’s Men gets a first proper trailer after that haunting teaser earlier this year. Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake might still be coming soon. And Jennifer Tilly is officially returning to Chucky.

Taking a quick break from new horror this week, we are however still discussing an incredibly dark and gritty film in the form of the latest appearance of The Batman. With a fantastic new lead actor and a super underrated director at the helm; we were very excited to see the most grim Gotham we’ve seen on the big screen so far. We give our verdict on the film and focus on the elements horror fans will enjoy such as a fantastic version of the riddler that would be more suited to a Saw film than a superhero one. Elsewhere this week; Fede Alvarez gets yet another new project that we hope actually happens. And Chucky comes to bluray in the UK very soon.

After already seeing the return of such horror icons as Ghostface, Chucky and Michael Myers in recent months, now is the time for old boy Leatherface to make his glorious return; to the small screen. Netflix are forcing the big guy to come out of retirement and fight his classic arch nemesis of Sally even though a man of his age should just be chilling by the fireplace at this point. This franchise has been pretty unwatchable for at least a couple of decades now so can this finally turn the tide? Let’s find out! Elsewhere this week; Stranger Things finally dates season 4 as well as a huge announcement about season 5. We should be getting A Quiet Place Part 3 but don’t expect it anytime soon. And we rant about not accepting mediocre video game adaptations based upon some of the best stories ever told in the medium.

Before a fairly big horror release on Netflix arrives later this week; we are chatting about another horror film that came to the service just last year. A Classic Horror Story blends meta genre conventions with self aware characters and hopefully can continue the trend of some of the fantastic foreign language films we’ve covered in the past. 20 to be exact including some real favourites of ours such as One Cut of the Dead and Titane from earlier this year. The latest instalment of our Ranking Wes Craven series sees the first film that neither of us had seen prior to this recent watch. Deadly Friend gives us a more Sci-fi route than we’ve been used to with Wes’ previous work and a robot that we still can’t believe cost $20,000. We discuss how we felt watching this for the first time in 2022, the history once again behind meddling studios and the usual classification board butchery. Then we get to adding it to our ranking so far which now stands at 11 films in total. Elsewhere this week in the news; a new Scream is coming to the surprise of no one. And Edgar Wright did at least get some recognition in the BAFTA nominations.
