SuperCoach Champions

Our next special guest needs no introduction, Tom Sangster, the real Guru of NRL SuperCoach. Catfish catches up with him about how the offseason has been for the team, the official launch of SuperCoach 2022; we talk through some of the logistics of the trade boost, what criteria might be considered for players having dual position status added in Rounds 6/12/18, being able to reverse trades mid-round and other things that may or may not arise during the season (refer to BBL SC). We finish off with a bit of fun too!

We're putting the band back together as Catfish and Bear review the final week of trials and highlight some of the key observations on players and the teams generally. Catfish gives a quick update on the penalty situation and then we dive a bit deeper into some strategy questions:-

This episode is part 2 of a very exciting collab with the Talking League NRL Fantasy podcast; we (Catfish, Joe Fitz and 2021 champ Tim Moodie) are joined by TK, Andy and Corby and in this part, this episode we become the student and TK, Andy and Corby teach us all the tricks to win NRL Fantasy. We had an absolute blast getting to know these legends and we hope you enjoy!

We've recommended that you get stuck into the Talking League podcast a lot this preseason - their player info and access to NRL players/coaches/etc. is second to none, and they offer really good insights and analysis to the on-field game. Don't worry so much about the stats and numbers (it's obviously a different game) but the other info is top notch.

Catfish and Joe Fitz review the second week of trials and highlight some of the key observations. We then dive a bit deeper into the truth about 2021's crazy scoring, the impact of the set restarts for 2021, the 2021 final series and what we've seen so far from the trial games regarding the rule tweak to penalties instead of set restarts inside your own 40m zone, and what that could mean for the likes of Turbo and other attacking stat reliant players.

Reigning 2021 NRL SuperCoach champion Tim Moodie (@TheSCLurker) joins Catfish and Joe Fitz to review the first taste of football in months. We highlight some of the key takeaways from the Broncos v Seagulls and the Indigenous v Maori Allstars game as well.

As always there's some interesting strategy chat including looking at how making decisions based on or against your gut feel can impact your decision-making long term. We look at when you should back your gut over the cheapies or the popular choices, and also discuss the captaincy in the early season.

[Note that this was recorded almost two weeks ago so some of the info could be a little outdated due to injuries, etc. that have occurred since. Apologies for the delayed release but there are still some really interesting points raised by Tim and Joe!]

2016 former champion Catfish is joined by reigning champion Tim Moodie, and 2020 former champion Joe Naddaf in this episode. Catfish lays out a rough draft of a team, featuring many of the highest ownership percentage players (as well as discussing highly owned players that aren't in the team) and we weigh up the pros and cons of starting off with those players.

Many thoughts and perspectives on players, strategy and all things SuperCoach are shared, plus things get a little loose at times, including Tim showing off his singing chops.

Bear is back! His first hit-up of 2022 this episode as he joins Catfish and Joe Fitz to dissect the changes that have been revealed to us after the official launch of NRL SuperCoach for 2022. Lots of great tweaks including obviously the higher trade numbers and the trade boost, as well as other benefits for the Draft side of the game.

We also tackle some of the more strategic questions thrown up via our Champs in our Champs discord - looking at whether we need to prioritise our salary cap usage differently in light of the scoring trends from the past two seasons, and look at whether there is any increased need for depth in this current COVID-19 environment. We also have a discussion about whether or not there will actually be much of an impact to NRL scoring (and hence NRL SuperCoach scoring) with the slight adjustment to the six again rule.

Catfish and Joe Fitz are back for part 2 of this important topic, and they're joined by reigning 2021 NRL SuperCoach champion Tim Moodie to look through which players jump out as either overpriced, or more importantly, underpriced, coming into the 2022 season. This might be due to discounts applied due to the number of games played, or a significant change in role, bench or injury-affected games, or perhaps it's due to potentially unsustainable levels of output and regression to the mean is inevitable.

It's the halfback, five eighth, centre/wing and fullback positions this time and there are are some spicy takes from early on. Catfish drops his first spicy prediction of 2022, Joe Fitz spends way too long talking about multiple Bulldogs' players, and Tim Moodie swings from starting with Turbo to reverting back to not starting with Turbo - all within one podcast episode! Lots of interesting chat so check it out.
