  • Discussion 18: The One With All The Monsters They Missed
KJ and Meredith have brought in recurring guest, renowned fic-writer Jenn to talk about some monsters that didn’t find a place in 327 episodes, but should have. We talk overarching mythologies, specific monsters and locations, and other missed opportunities. Meredith’s been keeping a list of some primo monsters that the SPN writers overlooked and it’s time to share the list with the world. We also talk about some monsters that were included but could have been done again, or could have lived up to their potential.

  • S04E12 Criss Angel is a Douchebag
Note: There’s a slight audio issue on this episode that resulted in some of the audio being a bit choppy, it appears to be a one-time problem, and we did what we could with it.
KJ knows way too much about Criss Angel this week and Meredith, Ella (The Cas Cast) and JJ (jjbwaywatch) are all forced to listen to it. JJ rates this episode out of Taco Bell Tacos and it makes the most perfect sense. The crew does some math as we get an update on the lost seals situation. There’s a lot of homoerotic subtext in this one, and it could not be ignored.
CW Episode Description: A mysterious death draws Sam and Dean to a town full of old-school magicians. Their investigation leads them to Charlie (guest star John Rubinstein), Jay (guest star Barry Bostwick) and Vernon (guest star Richard Libertini), three friends who were famous magicians in their day but have now been replaced by flashier, younger magicians. One of them has made a deal to acquire real magical powers, but the price was extremely high. Sam and Dean must figure out a way to reverse the spell before others are harmed.

  • S04E11: The One With The Kids in the Walls
Content warning to animal cruelty/death in this episode. We don’t want to talk about it either. As promised, KJ and Meredith are all alone this week to hustle through this episode and provide insights in a quick and efficient manner that leaves us dwelling on the hand-licking and dog dying for as little time as possible. As promised, KJ hates this episode, and maybe that’s fun for everyone else? KJ and Meredith split the case of the week segment with two different real life crimes that this episode was possibly inspired by.
CW Episode Description: Sam and Dean investigate the appearance of a young female ghost in an abandoned house, but things become more complicated when a family moves in. The brothers fail to get the family to leave, but when the son is kidnapped through the walls, they look to Sam and Dean to rescue the boy.

  • S04E10: The One Where Everyone Calls Everyone's Bluff
KJ and Meredith are joined by Sarah as heaven and hell collide over Anna. Bobby’s wisely on vacation, something we all wish we were on. Sarah discredits one of Sam’s crowning moments with insightful interpretation and brings us an absolute bombshell deleted scene that KJ and Meredith have not seen before.
CW Episode Description: Anna (guest star Julie McNiven) remembers her past and Sam and Dean finally understand why Castiel (guest star Misha Collins) and Uriel (guest star Robert Wisdom) want her dead. However, they disagree with the angels' orders and try to help Anna restore an important part of her past so she can be saved. Meanwhile, Alastair (guest star Mark Rolston) and his demons continue to close in on Anna and the brothers.

  • S04E09: The One Where Ruby Recycles
KJ is joined by Meredith as well as the hosts of Idling in the Impala, Sandra and Kasey, where KJ finds company in the pro-Sam camp. A lot of information about Sam comes to light in this one, and the reinforcement was absolutely needed. We also get a lot of information about the actual mechanics of The Apocalypse™. Also new angels and demons drop, and we apply too much earth logic to the CW’s Supernatural.
Other topics include: first aid and wound care, John slander, Ruby’s french fry order, intimacy coordinators, demon vessel gender roles, corporate policies on demon deals, and Alistair being OP
CW Episode Description: Ruby (guest star Genevieve Cortese) tells Sam and Dean that a powerful demon named Alastair (guest star Mark Rolston) is searching for a girl named Anna (guest star Julie McNiven) who can hear the angels' conversations. The three set out to find Anna but once they do, Alastair attacks them and Ruby escapes with the girl. Believing they were set up, Dean lashes out at Sam for trusting Ruby, so Sam tells him what happened during those months Dean was in Hell and how Ruby saved his life. Castiel (guest star Misha Collins) and Uriel (guest star Robert Wisdom) return and demand to be taken to Anna but not for the reason Dean thinks.

  • Discussion 17: The One Where There's No Peace When You Are Done
Have you ever invested significant emotions and time into a franchise only for a character who has spent all their screen time valiantly overcoming their demons to be struck down (maybe poetically, maybe just cruelly) in the final moments? Had all their character development undone for the sake of symmetry? (If you answer no, I've got bad news for you about some upcoming content on this podcast) Were you left emotionally bereft when a character was killed off instead of given the in-universe time and resources to manage their trauma? Well, you're not alone! KJ and Meredith are joined this week by Mary (Carrying Wayward) and JJ (@jjbwaywatch) to talk about some shows and movies that ended in the death of a major (and thoroughly traumatized) character, and discuss why this trope is so popular with writers but maybe less popular with the audience.
Spoiler alert for the endings and/or major character deaths of the following pieces of media: Supernatural, Teen Wolf, Sons of Anarchy, Veronica Mars, Game of Thrones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, The Princess Bride, Star Wars, and Timeless.

  • S04E08: The One Where Dean's Heart's Desire is a Sandwich
Meredith’s away so KJ and Frances will play- aka talk about this wacky episode of Supernatural where Sam dies and no one even remembers it happening. There’s a lot of out of pocket events in this episode for KJ and Frances to riff on including the denouncement of Bigfoot in the Supernatural universe. Sam and Dean also go for a record number of different alias jobs in one episode. Everyone strap in for this week’s mental health check because Sam can’t actually think of a wish for himself, and Dean’s alcoholism is markedly and measurably worse.
Other topics: the solution to Sam and Dean’s money problems, the infamous story of Jared and the raw ribs, IRL Teddy Bear Doctors, Sam and Dean’s pretty privilege, and the real life true crime case connected to one of the one off actors in this episode.
CW Episode Description: Sam and Dean investigate a small town where the wishing well really works. A teddy bear comes to life, someone wins the lottery and the town geek gets a hot girlfriend. The brothers realize that while everyone is happy now, the end result will be disastrous.

  • S04E07: The One Where Dean Wants To Be a Hot Cheerleader
Sam and Cas are finally meeting, so it’s fitting that KJ and Meredith are meeting a brand new guest this week, Tessy! The group wonders where Cas has been if so many seals have been breaking, and makes some suggestions on how Heaven might better communicate with the Winchester. A complaint is lodged directly to Eric Kripke about a recurring narrative choice. KJ comes clean about their personal ships and then calls CPS on God.
Other topics include: Halloween, faith, arrogant Sam, the angels being drama-starters, and Dean’s ripped jeans.
CW Episode Description: It's a few days before Halloween and Sam and Dean investigate two mysterious deaths in a small town. The brothers find hex bags and deduce a witch is sacrificing people to summon a dangerous demon named Samhain. Castiel (guest star Misha Collins) arrives in town and tells Sam and Dean the freeing of Samhain is one of the Seals that will lead to freeing Lucifer, so Castiel has brought a specialist angel named Uriel (guest star Robert Wisdom) to smite the entire town.

  • S04E06: The One Where Dean Reacts To Their Work Like a Normal Person
KJ and Meredith are joined by fellow podcaster Katie (Making It Up As We Go: A Destiel Fanfic Anthology Podcast) to talk about fears in this week’s episode of Supernatural. Dean’s infected with ghost sickness and we get a glimpse into some of his deepest fears. KJ argues **gasp** that Sam is just as much of a jerk as Dean and should have been infected, and the crew wonder if Sam is turning evil or is it a lingering symptom of Dean’s fear.
Other topics include: The July 2023 attack on AO3, Down To Agincourt, the word ‘road-hauled’, Bobby’s language skills, the iconic Eye of the Tiger end credit scene, and shows that can genre-switch for one-off episodes, and KJ and Meredith learn about the death of Twitter on record.
CW Episode Description: Sam and Dean investigate the mysterious deaths of several men who apparently dropped dead of fright. They visit one of the victims in the morgue, and Dean becomes infected with the illness which starts as a general anxiety, then moves on to full-blown terror that eventually stops the heart. Sam and Bobby (guest star Jim Beaver) must find the root of the disease before Dean dies and is sent back to Hell.

  • S04E05: The One Where Everyone Committed to the Bit
KJ previously went on record in a bonus episode of Driver Picks the Podcast to rank this episode as one of their bottom five of the Kripke Era. This week, Beth and Jamie come aboard with KJ and Meredith to convince KJ that this episode is actually *art*. This episode is fun old-horror movie themed and the bottom line is that this episode works because everyone committed to the bit.
Other topics include: Sam going to movies alone, Oktoberfest, Halloween, Australian vs Canadian holidays, and who has the most one-off characters with the same name as them (lowkey reveal of KJ’s government name), Sam and Dean’s respective approaches to flirting, and KJ gives a piece of "parenting advice" that the rest of the panel judge to be on the level with Parent of the Year John Winchester.
CW Episode Description: Dean and Sam investigate several murders at Oktoberfest. The first victim was found with bite marks on her neck, much like a vampire would leave, while the second victim has wounds that look like a werewolf attack. After a mummy rises from his crypt, Dean determines that a shape-shifter demon is terrorizing the town as iconic monsters from the old Hollywood movies.
