Supernatural Opinions

Joining KJ and Meredith this week are two first time guests Alyssa and Meg. This week’s episode leads to the most complicated and potentially controversial death count segment to date, thanks to alternate realities, demonic viruses, and the humanization of an angel. Meredith gives us the 4-1-1 on Lucifer in the mythology segment, while KJ alternates between gratitude for Sam’s socks and a plea for ethical non-monogamy in the event of post-apocalyptic life.
CW Episode Description: Sam tells Dean he wants to rejoin Dean in the battle of the Apocalypse, but Dean tells Sam that they are better off apart. Later, Dean awakens five years in the future in an abandoned city and is attacked by humans who have been infected with a demonic virus that turns humans into Zombies. Zachariah (guest star Kurt Fuller) appears to Dean and explains that this is the world that exists as a result of Dean saying no to helping the angels fight Lucifer. Dean meets up with Future Dean, who tells him that the virus is the Devil's endgame for destroying mankind. Misha Collins also stars.

KJ and Meredith are sitting down with fellow Pod Squad member August (Saving People, Queering Things) and first time guest Nell (Totally Normal About That) to talk about this very destiel-heavy episode of the CW’s Supernatural. There are two things we know this week: Bert and Ernie are gay, and so are Dean and Cas. KJ does in depth analysis about Sam’s sleeping positions. The crew gives some advice on how best to interact with new co-workers without causing an HR incident.
CW Episode Description: Not sure he trusts himself anymore, Sam decides to give up hunting, but a late-night visitor (guest star Adrianne Palicki) won't let him off the hook that easily. Dean, intent on stopping the Apocalypse, continues hunting on his own and teams up with Castiel to find the Archangel Raphael, as Castiel believes Raphael knows God's location.

This episode featuring Sadie from In Defense of Fandom has KJ and Meredith on a bit of an archeological dig back in time on the internet. A time when three fandoms combined at the convergence point of tumblr dot com - Superwholock. The trio digs into what brought fans of these three different shows together, and theorize about why they faded into the void of the internet just a few years later. This episode digs into internet fandom behaviour, tumblr as whole, the impacts of DashCon, fandom evolution, and fandom etiquette (please y’all, hold yourselves together, we beg you!)

KJ and Meredith are joined this week by Rick, who has never watched Supernatural so they put their brotherly bipartisanship to the test. This is a deep dive about hitting rock bottom, how we really got to where we are, and forging new paths in the aftermath. Plus we finally get eyes on some long-lost friends, which has KJ and Meredith jumping for joy. Meredith also has a biblical book to focus her research on.
CW Episode Description: Castiel tells Sam and Dean that he is going to search for God, who will be able to defeat Lucifer. Bobby's (guest star Jim Beaver) old hunter friend, Rufus (guest star Steven Williams), is panicked about demons attacking his town, and begs Bobby for help. Sam and Dean arrive at the town and realize there is a spell over the townspeople, making them hallucinate that they are demons and causing them to kill one another.

KJ and Meredith, much like the Winchester brothers, are reuniting for the next chapter of the Supernatural saga, kicking off a new season. For all of y’all who wished KJ was more on team Dean, this may at times be the episode for you, with several instances of KJ having empathy for Dean and condemning Sam’s actions. Together, our cohosts try to pinpoint where Bobby got jumped.
CW Episode Description: Picking up where the finale left off, Dean and Sam watch as the Devil (guest star Mark Pellegrino, "Lost") emerges from Hell. The brothers and Bobby (guest star Jim Beaver) deal with the aftermath of Lucifer rising and the stunning news from Chuck the Prophet (guest star Rob Benedict) that Castiel was blown to bits by the archangels.

Closing out the fourth season has brought KJ and Meredith back to the recording studio to talk about some of their favorite things about season 4, review some stats, and answer listener questions. KJ enlists a spreadsheet to do the stats math before the duo look ahead to the things they’re looking forward to in season 5.

Sarah is joining Meredith and KJ at the end of this nail-biter season. The Apocalypse is truly nigh, leaving the group to wonder about the source of the fake voicemail and even more mysteriously the details of Chuck’s last-night-on-Earth plan. KJ tells an unexpected (but actually enjoyable!) prank anecdote.
CW Episode Description: The Apocalypse is coming, and Sam and Dean prepare for the fight in very different ways. Sam joins Ruby (guest star Genevieve Cortese) on a final run to kill Lilith (guest star Katherine Boecher), while Castiel (guest star Misha Collins) and Zachariah (guest star Kurt Fuller) tell Dean it's time to play his part in stopping Lucifer.

Things with the Winchester brothers are tense, which means KJ’s ‘protect Sam Winchester’ alarm is blaring! KJ and Meredith are joined by returning guest Nick and first time guest, a true tumblrino, Androids! KJ calls into question the location planning of the panic room and the liver and kidney function of Bobby and the Winchesters. Lots of deep thoughts on character motivations, the way we rationalize on a human level, and some silly wonderings about the exact mechanics of demon blood as an addictive substance.
CW Episode Description: Dean and Bobby (guest star Jim Beaver) lock Sam in Bobby's panic room so he can detox from the demon blood. However, as Bobby sees more seals are being broken he tells Dean they should let Sam out to help them fight the impending apocalypse. Dean disagrees and goes to Castiel (guest star Misha Collins) for help. Sam and Dean have a big blowout confrontation.

KJ and Meredith invited Pluto to come talk about Castiel and queerness, but through the powers of discussion, this episode actually ended up being about a lot of the metatext and paratext around Supernatural in its middle years and since.
Some topics covered include: the crypt scene (S08E17), the foundations of Destiel, the infamous 2016 Destiel Market Research, the 2013 Chad Kennedy tweets, and the widower arc.

Have you ever invested significant emotions and time into a franchise only for a character who has spent all their screen time valiantly overcoming their demons to be struck down (maybe poetically, maybe just cruelly) in the final moments? Had all their character development undone for the sake of symmetry? (If you answer no, I've got bad news for you about some upcoming content on this podcast) Were you left emotionally bereft when a character was killed off instead of given the in-universe time and resources to manage their trauma? Well, you're not alone! KJ and Meredith are joined this week by Mary (Carrying Wayward) and JJ (@jjbwaywatch) to talk about some shows and movies that ended in the death of a major (and thoroughly traumatized) character, and discuss why this trope is so popular with writers but maybe less popular with the audience.
Spoiler alert for the endings and/or major character deaths of the following pieces of media: Supernatural, Teen Wolf, Sons of Anarchy, Veronica Mars, Game of Thrones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, The Princess Bride, and Timeless.
