Supernatural Opinions

KJ and Meredith are joined by KJ’s Series of Opinions cohost Moira and Mary (Carrying Wayward) to talk about Supernatural, as well as another show that aired a pilot on September 13, 2005-Bones. Based on the life and crime fiction novels of Kathy Reichs, Bones is a crime procedural that follows Dr. Temperance Brennan and her team of scientists in helping FBI Agent Seeley Booth solve murders where the remains are particularly degraded. These two shows have a surprising amount in common, from slow burn ships to daddy-issues to dubious science, and this team has things to say about all of it!

KJ and Meredith are hosting a slightly emotionally damaging holiday party with Jordan and Jeremy (Monster of the Week and Still His Kingdom Keeps). Small Sam and Dean are being neglected by John (big surprise), and Adult Sam and Dean are facing down their last Christmas together. Our monsters this week are frighteningly polite but that doesn’t stop them from trying to eat our favorite monster hunters. Jeremy shares some old MOTW notes, Meredith shares some history of the word pagan, and the group discusses the brain damage the Winchesters have caused themselves drinking and being knocked out over the years.

CW Episode Description: It's Christmas time and Sam and Dean investigate a series of murders where the victims were pulled up through the chimney. Sam realizes they are dealing with a sort of Anti-Santa, a demon with roots in pagan lore. Dean wants to celebrate Christmas the old fashioned way as this is his last, but Sam refuses, not wanting to accept that Dean won't be around next year. Sam flashes back to a certain Christmas when he waited for his father to come home to give him a special gift.

KJ and Meredith are joined by long-time guest Frances, as well as Meredith’s sister Audrey for the conclusion of Gordon’s storyline. If we had a nickel for every time a former Buffy actress played a vampire in a Gordon episode, we’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that this time KJ’s seen all of BTVS. It’s also a Bela episode, and Sam and Dean have *checks notes* their 100th fight about Dean’s deal this season. At least this one leads to actual communication.
CW Episode Description: Sam and Dean capture a female vampire named Lucy (guest star Mercedes McNab) who claims to have no knowledge of how she became a vampire. The guys discover Dixon (guest star Matthew Humphreys), a male vampire, is giving out human blood to unsuspecting females in bars, offering it up as the "latest drug" and turning them all into vampires. Meanwhile, Gordon (guest star Sterling K. Brown) escapes from jail and goes after Sam. However, Dixon intercepts Gordon and turns him into a vampire, which makes Gordon more powerful than before and a much bigger threat to Sam.

KJ and Meredith team up with Driver Picks The Podcast and Thief Steals the Podcast co-hosts Beth and Jamie to talk about Bela (and probably also the rest of this episode, if there’s time left over). There’s cross-continental education on the term “Sheila”, public water fountains, international minimum wage, as well as rock salt bullet physics, Sam’s hair, and whether or not Dean is considered to be legally dead.
CW Episode Description: Sam and Dean investigate the mysterious demise of drowned victims who were nowhere near the water at the time of their death. The brothers learn each of the victims saw a ghost ship shortly before they died. Upon investigation, they cross paths with Bela, who is being paid handsomely by one of the murder victim's family members to solve the case. Sam and Dean warn her to stay out of their way, but she has other plans.

Despite gathering some lovers of fairytales, this episode failed to impress KJ or their guests-Meredith, Nick, and Audrey. However Meredith did give us a great lesson on the Grim Brothers, everyone writes a happy ending for two characters most harmed in the course of this episode, and Audrey and KJ do double-takes at the Demi Lovato look-alike in this episode. Also too many Into The Woods references are made, cause, you know, fairytales!
CW Episode Description: Sam and Dean investigate a small town that has been plagued by a number of strange murders that resemble fairy tales, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel. Meanwhile, Sam summons the Crossroad Demon (guest star Sandra McCoy) and threatens to kill her with the newly rebuilt Colt unless she releases Dean from his deal.

KJ, Meredith, Nick, and August (Saving People, Queering Things and Wayward Parents) team up to talk about character deaths. Along the way they try to remember the many, MANY, ways Sam and Dean Winchester have shuffled off this mortal coil. Turns out-it’s ACTUALLY hard to remember how many times a member of Team Free Will has bit the dust. Also we talk episodes that handled character death well, versus episodes that…did not. We talk about the impact of death to the audience, fridging, and bury your gays.

KJ and Meredith are continuing their way though season three, hoping to one day reach a season with Castiel in it-so they’re joined by Ella and Ilse from The Cas Cast-a Supernatural podcast all about Castiel. In the absence of Castiel, the team is left to discuss Sam’s awkward B&E, and the very important question of where does the sulphur left behind from demons come from? And Meredith shares an idea for a fanfic based on this episode!

CW Episode Description: Sam and Dean investigate a rash of violent deaths in Elizabethville, Ohio, a once-sleepy town that has been turned into a haven for gamblers and drinkers. Dean discovers demons have infiltrated Elizabethville and are using their powers of persuasion to make the townspeople succumb to their basic instincts. Meanwhile, Ruby helps Bobby (guest star Jim Beaver) rebuild the Colt from scratch and stuns him with some news.

With season 2 of Bridgewater just days away, KJ is sending us back in time to when season one of Bridgewater had just ended and reuploading Discussion 5: The One With The Bridgewater Triangle for anyone who wants/needs a little refresher on what happened in Hockomock Swamp and Freetown Forest all those years ago.

KJ's on taking a break from Supernatural to take up a mission to decode the mysteries of the Bridgewater triangle! KJ, Meredith, Frances, and Julia talk about Misha Collins' lead role in the Bridgewater Podcast as Jeremy Bradshaw, folklore professor and victim of the supernatural forces surrounding the Bridgwater triangle and Freetown Forest.
KJ has some questions about the timeline, a deep appreciation for Misha Collins swearing, and a group of friends willing to put their best predictions for season 2 out there for the world.

Today’s topic is good luck vs bad luck, and KJ and Meredith are lucky enough to be joined by podcasting duo Beth and Jamie of Driver Picks The Podcast (and Thief Steals The Podcast, and in Beth’s case, KJ’s cohost on Wayward Parents). There’s a new recurring character this week and KJ’s bisexual thirst-ometer is getting some off the charts readings. Beth and Jamie raise some questions about where Sam’s soccer trophy came from. KJ needs Gordon to take a step back from her boy, Sammy. And Meredith’s got the educational goods on why this episode centers on a crusty rabbit’s foot versus something more pleasant to look at. There’s also niche psychology jokes, religious bumper stickers, and more!
CW Episode Description: Sam and Dean answer a call on their dad's old cell phone, alerting them someone has broken into John's secret storage room in New York. They discover a cursed rabbit's foot has been stolen and call Bobby (guest star Jim Beaver) for help. He advises them to beware of the foot because anyone who touches it will receive an extreme amount of good luck, but once the foot is lost that person will die. Unfortunately, Sam has already handled the foot, which causes an overjoyed Dean to buy lottery tickets, but a female thief steals it from Sam causing his luck to plummet and putting his life in danger.

A full house of Supernatural podcasters this week! And, while everyone on this episode CLAIMED to be a Dean-is-Ben’s-father truther, this episode turned into a Mamma Mia situation when the group gathered up three potential candidates to be Ben’s father. It’s finally Meredith’s week to talk about changelings, Jeremy threatens to walk out over the MVP segment, JJ springs a surprising fact on us about the mythology of My Little Pony, and Katie finds the terrorized moms hiding in the bathroom super-relatable!
CW Episode Description: Dean pressures Sam into visiting Cicero, Indiana, so he can visit an old flame named Lisa(guest star Cindy Sampson), he had a tryst nine years ago. However, Dean is stunned when he meets not only Lisa again, but also her 8-year-old son Ben (guest star Nicholas Elia), who bears a striking resemblance to him. However, Ben soon goes missing and Sam and Dean discover that a Changeling, a demonic parasite, is snatching kids from the small town and assuming their form. Meanwhile, Ruby makes contact with Sam and reveals some startling information about his mom.
