Supernatural Opinions

This week, KJ has compiled some scary stories acquired during past recordings, and through our podcast email and discord server. Some of the guests shared local legends from their hometowns, others shared personal encounters with the other side! Grab a handful of candy to munch on and settle in!

New season, same podcast! KJ, Meredith, and Ella (The Cas Cast) are recapping and discussing The Magnificent Seven. Sam, Dean, Bobby, and one Mysterious Blondie of the Night are up against the seven deadly sins, Dean’s hurting everyone’s feelings (including ours) by being flippant about his impending death. And everyone struggles with the mouth-feel of the name Tamara.
CW Episode Description: Bracing themselves for the possibility of an apocalyptic war, Sam and Dean realize they have an enormous task of hunting down the hundreds of demons that escaped from the Devil's Gate. With only a year left to live, Dean decides to live life to the fullest and exhibits a carefree attitude that troubles Sam, who is trying to find a loophole in the deal. Bobby (guest star Jim Beaver) tells the brothers about a sighting in Nebraska that turns out to be seven demons that are the actual manifestations of the Seven Deadly Sins.

KJ and Meredith are getting an education on fan fiction from repeat guest and fanfic author Jenn and Professor Alpha themself-Berklie, aka @icaruspendragon. Jenn tells us a bit about her Supernatural rewrite fic, heard from your mother (she don’t recognize you)- which is over half a million words (but she has a summary version available for those who want to know what happens quickly). Berk shares the story of faking her death on fanfiction.net (including reading some of the comments left after the news broke)! KJ plays fast and loose with punctuation-measure the use of commas with your heart! Jenn shares a story about leaving a friend her AO3 password in case of death and KJ officially designates Meredith in charge of the pod in the event of their untimely demise. Other topics include: favourite tropes, best and worst comments received on fics, fandom culture/etiquette, November 5, the building of fandom and fan works around newer media including Euphoria, Our Flag Means Death, and Stranger Things,

KJ and Meredith take a minute (47 of them, actually) to reflect on the second season of Supernatural-deaths, secrets, and demon deals as well as look ahead to some of the things coming in Season 3. Additionally some running statistics are analysed (it is NOT looking good for the Bechdel test, friends), and a minor plug for KJ’s The Winchesters podcast Wayward Parents.

Back to finish the job, KJ, Meredith, and Jordan are together again to watch helplessly as Dean sells his soul, and heckle John’s ghost. KJ is perplexed by the existence of Jake in this narrative but has eyes on the Winchester’s post-resurrection feast, Sam is rising from the dead, Dean is exhibiting an acute mental health crisis, and Meredith, KJ, and Jordan help Bobby plan the perfect murder.
CW Episode Description: Dean must deal with the aftermath of the fight between Sam and Jake (guest star Aldis Hodge) and pays a steep price for his involvement. The Demon and his spirits threaten to overtake the hunters until they receive help from an unexpected ally.

KJ, Meredith, and Jordan are entering a mourning period as they cover the episode with the most recurring character deaths to date. It’s a bad episode to be one of our favorite little weirdos. Meredith’s got a mythology section on Acheri demons that boils down to “colonizers screwed up a lot of things including this particular myth” and Jordan and KJ are trying to get this podcast some paid sponsorship. Meanwhile, Dean’s in a big brother panic and Sam’s fighting for his life in a truly confusing fight scene, and Eric Kripke brings down the fist of God on his least favorite set piece, which continues to baffle KJ.
CW Episode Description: Sam is abducted by the Yellow-Eyed Demon and finds himself in a ghost town with other children who have special abilities. They learn the Demon has brought them together to initiate his endgame: an all-out war against the human race. In an effort to encourage Sam to fight, the Demon shows him what really happened to one of his parents. Dean enlists Bobby's (guest star Jim Beaver) help to find Sam before the battle begins, but he arrives too late.

KJ, Meredith, Nick, and Jordan are deep diving into one of Dean Winchester’s deepest desires after a run-in with a genie. Sam and Dean swap out the Impala’s license plates after last week’s run-in with the FBI, but Dean takes it one step further and swaps out lives. Meredith has some very interesting but somewhat disappointing djinn facts. And KJ is beyond thirsty for the Winchesters and their partners, and over-invested in the contents of Wish-verse Sam’s email inbox.
CW Episode Description: While hunting a Djinn, (a genie) , Dean is attacked and transported to a world where his mother (guest star Samantha Smith) is alive, Sam is in law school and engaged to Jessica(guest star Adrianne Palicki), and Dean lives a very normal life with his girlfriend (guest star Michelle Borth). However, after he starts seeing a strange girl (guest star Melanie Neige Scrofano) and learns all the people he has saved in the past have died, Dean must decide whether he wants to stay in this new safe life where everyone he loves is alive or if he should return to the hunt.

KJ, Meredith, Whiskey, and Francis are heading to prison this week! Or, well, they’re following the Winchesters to county jail on their very misguided, ill-conceived plan to fulfill an imaginary obligation to John Winchester’s friend Deacon. KJ’s criminal justice education makes them want to fight Sam Winchester, and their existence as a feminist makes them want to fight Henriksen. and while Meredith has no mythology to provide this week, guests Francis and Whiskey come prepared with some tales of haunted prisons.
CW Episode Description: After hearing about a ghost that has been killing off inmates one by one, Sam and Dean decide the best way to investigate this spirit is from the inside and allow themselves to get thrown into the state penitentiary. However, after FBI agent Henriksen (guest star C. Malik Whitfield) shows up to take over their case, getting out of prison becomes a bigger challenge than finding the spirit.

Content warning, this week’s episode may induce big feelings, particularly feelings of rage directed at John Winchester. KJ, Meredith, Jenn, and Moira unexpectedly reconvene for a second week in a row. This time, they’re making a list and checking it twice…for confirm that Sam Winchester’s life has consistently sucked his ENTIRE life. Be it God, angels, demons, or just good old fashioned abusive parenting-someone’s been shaping Sam’s destiny from before day one. KJ has John’s Journal in hand as they take the guests on a chronological journey through the demonic weirdness of Sam’s childhood and then John’s inability to parent and the resulting parentification of Dean.

New project alert! KJ is teaming up with Abigail and Elayna from Saving People Queering Things and Beth from Driver Picks The Podcast for an all new podcast, Wayward Parents, where they will be watching (probably between their fingers) the CW Supernatural prequel, The Winchesters, and then getting together to unpack it each week. Bonus episodes periodically until October when the show premieres.
