  • Vesak Poya - APPLICATION OF YONISO MANASIKĀRA: WHY IS THERE OLD AGE AND DEATH?

Welcome to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

This is ONLY the APPLICATION OF YONISO MANASIKARA - WHY IS THERE OLD AGE & DEATH? from the Vesak Poya Dhamma Session, conducted via zoom on 26 May 2021.

**Please note - each contemplation is a gradual and sequential development of yoniso manasikara, therefore you may wish to do the meditations or contemplations in sequence.

For the full 3.5hr session (including contemplations) you can listen to episode 103 WHY YONISO MANASIKARA IS ESSENTIAL TO THE NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH (Vesak Poya FULL Dhamma Session)

In this segment from the Vesak Poya Dhamma Session,

    • we examine Buddha's teaching on dependent origination (paṭiccasamuppāda) and what Buddha contemplated prior to his awakening : ‘Alas, this world has fallen into trouble. It’s born, grows old, dies, passes away, and is reborn, yet it doesn’t understand how to escape from this suffering, from old age and death. Oh, when will an escape be found from this suffering, from old age and death?’
    • "deep dive" into Buddha's words: ‘When what exists is there old age and death? What is a condition for old age and death?’ Then, through wisely directing the mind, I comprehended with wisdom: ‘When there is birth, old age and death come to be. Birth is a condition for old age and death.’
    • highlight the difference between conventional answers vs Buddha's answer for death
    • specifically look at the paṭiccasamuppāda link of Birth leading to Old Age and Death
    • meditation instructions to examine this paṭiccasamuppāda link with ayoniso manasikara vs yoniso manasikara
    • The main suttas supporting this contemplation:

      • — Gotama Sutta (SN 12.10)
      • — Nagara Sutta (SN 12.65)
      • — Paṭiccasamuppāda Sutta (SN 12.1)

      • Vesak Poya - APPLICATION OF YONISO MANASIKĀRA: IMPERMANENCE OF SENSE BASES & SENSE OBJECTS

Welcome to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

This is ONLY the APPLICATION OF YONISO MANASIKARA OF THE IMPERMANENCE OF SENSE BASES & SENSE OBJECTS from the Vesak Poya Dhamma Session, conducted via zoom on 26 May 2021.

In this segment from the Vesak Poya Dhamma Session, we briefly examine Buddha's teachings on the impermanence of the sense bases and sense objects. It follows on from the yoniso mansikara contemplation of impermanence of the five aggregates. It's useful to do this meditation (although we didn't during the Dhamma session) as it reinforces the earlier meditation, so you really start to see in your meditation the deathbound nature of everything that is conditioned by the five aggregates. we continuously personalise and identify with the wrong view of the sense bases and sense objects, but if you continue to develop these contemplations, you will see the lie, falsity and deception of what is conditioned in samsara.

The main suttas supporting this contemplation:

        • — Ajjhattaaniccanandikkhaya Sutta (SN 35.158)
        • — Bāhiraaniccanandikkhaya Sutta (SN 35.159)

        • Vesak Poya - APPLICATION OF YONISO MANASIKĀRA: IMPERMANENCE OF THE FIVE AGGREGATES

Welcome to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

This is ONLY the APPLICATION OF YONISO MANASIKARA OF THE IMPERMANENCE OF THE FIVE AGGREGATES from the Vesak Poya Dhamma Session, conducted via zoom on 26 May 2021.

**Please note - each contemplation is a gradual and sequential development of yoniso manasikara, therefore you may wish to do the meditations or contemplations in sequence.

In this segment from the Vesak Poya Dhamma Session, we examine Buddha's teachings on:

          • ayoniso manasikara - how we misapprehend (unwisely contemplate) the five aggregates, cling to them, identify with them resulting in wrong view and continuation in samsara
          • yoniso manasikara - how to wisely contemplate and direct the mind towards anicca or impermanence of the five aggregates
          • recognise the process as a "death trap", where everything in samsara is conditioned, therefore deathbound
          • meditation instruction - use our own examples seeing five aggregates as a whole (but this can be done for each of the five aggregates) to see both ayoniso manasikara (nicca as permanent, lasting, stable, reliable, not subject to change, and not arising and passing away, thus valuable and substantial) vs yoniso manasikara (anicca as impermanent, unlasting, unstable, unreliable, subject to change, see the arising and passing away, therefore not valuable, no substance). In the meditation, you ask "which is the truth?"
          • The main suttas supporting this contemplation:

            • — Dutiyanandikkhaya Sutta (SN 22.52)

              • reminder to notice how the mind settles towards the right direction (towards the Noble Eightfold Path, leading with Right View) after applying yoniso manasikara

                            • HOW DO I DEVELOP & IMPROVE THE PERCEPTION OF LIGHT? - Dhamma Q&A

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

In this segment, we look at the question that has been asked:

"I am quite keen to see whether I can improve my ‘āloka-saññā’ meditation. It was kindly explained [at a recent Dhamma session]. Still I could not take in every thing that was explained. I have meditated on a bright white light only. Will you be able to explain it more on how to proceed?”

                              To answer this question we

                              • - examine some key sutta references and Buddha's teachings on light and the perception of light
                              • - briefly revisit the perception of light as the medicine for dullness & drowsiness and the Buddha's teaching to Venerable Mahamoggallana (prior to his full awakening) on the seven ways to overcome drowsiness
                              • - explain how applying the perception of light to other meditations can aid concentration and deepen insight
                              • - look at the relationship with colour and white light and how we can use that to improve our practice.
                              • Suttas mentioned in this segment:

                                • — Samādhibhāvanā Sutta (AN 4.41)

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

Following the talk on poya on Buddha's Advice to Lay People on Stream Entry, a question has been raised:

“You briefly mentioned the four factors leading to Stream Entry – associating with good people, hearing the True Dhamma, wise attention and practicing in accordance with the Dhamma. Appreciate if you could explain each factor and how to develop them”

To answer the question the following suttas were directly or indirectly referenced (more are cited in the video's presentation slides):
