About our guest  

As the head of department in farrowing at Peters Creek Sow Farm for  Murphy Family Ventures, I have found a passion for an industry and  career that I otherwise would have never stumbled upon previously. I was  only first introduced to the pork industry in the spring of 2020. Now, I  find myself gaining more experience daily while aiming to see the  industry succeed in an ever-changing world. After being selected as the  2023 NC Pork Council Emerging Leader, I hope to spark a desire in others  within our industry and look forward to the years to come. Outside of  work, I enjoy quality time with my wife and son, tending to my goats and  dogs, catching up with family and friends, all while trying to stay  active in some of my favorite hobbies such as hunting, fishing, and  golfing.

The story of Rachel & Kyle Schulte joins us for In Swine Versation.  We discuss each of their backgrounds in the industry, how they met at  the The Maschhoffs through the fine details of firsts dates and how  other couples also met and got married through The Maschhoffs. We  discuss how they live on Rachel's family farm, what a typical day looks  like for them. We learn about Applewood Farms and Kyle's perspective on  finding himself in the middle between research and practical  application. We learn about how the couple is famous for receiving Pig  gigs/trinkets and where you can find them through the house. We wrap on  asking One defining moment on the Farm, whether it adversity, success,  or promise.

About our guests  

Kyle and Rachel Schulte live on their family farm in Central Illinois.  Kyle is a production manager for Applewood Farms, a 14,000 sow  internally multiplied farrow-to-wean operation, while Rachel is a swine  veterinarian for pork producers throughout the Midwest.

Kyle and Rachel first met at The Maschhoffs, where Kyle was managing the  Genetic Testing Center, and Rachel was interning in the Research and  Innovation Department. Rachel was impressed by Kyle’s paint can juggling  skills, as well as his positive outlook in the face of a lot of hard  work.  At that point, Rachel had just graduated with her Animal Science degree  from Texas A&M University, and was headed off to Iowa State for her  DVM, so Kyle requested a transfer to north-central Iowa to work as a  Senior Field Advisor. He then worked in technical services for Ralco,  formulating diets and managing their research farm.

Both Rachel and Kyle grew up on their family's grain and livestock farms  and knew that they wanted that type of upbringing for their children.  So in 2019, they moved back to Rachel’s family farm in central Illinois.  As for what's next, they think the future is full of opportunities, and  they feel ready to tackle the many things that are sure to come next.

Dr. Joe Connor the founder of Carthage Veterinary Service, LTD joins us  as we welcome him to the Swine Web Hall of Fame.   We discuss his journey/career. Learning about his mentors, and what he  would do different. We talk about his vast international experience,  stand out memory, key to longevity, untold story and his sage advice  pertaining to how to set the next "Joe Connor" up for Swine Industry  success. 

About our guest

 Dr. Joseph Connor is the founder of Carthage Veterinary Service, LTD. He  purchased the CVS practice in 1980 and built his client service network  to become one of the foremost swine veterinarians in the world. CVS  maintains client service relationships with over 500,000 sows in the US.  Dr. Connor regularly consults with other veterinarians to bring new  disease management practices to producers in the U.S. and in other  countries including Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Australia, China and  countries in Europe. Dr. Connor is a featured speaker at many industry  programs and has published a wide variety of peer reviewed articles on  swine health, nutrition, and disease.  Dr. Connor obtained his Doctoral degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1976  from the University of Illinois, and subsequently, an M.S. degree in  Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota in 2006, and  completed the Executive Veterinary Program in 2009 with the University  of Illinois. He is the past President of the American Association of  Swine Practitioners and through that Association has received the Allen  D. Leman Practice Award and Practitioner of the Year Award.
