Minnie

Minnie a Dachshund/Terrier mix, was rescued 12 years ago by Christa Wilson. Minnie had extreme allgergies and fleas so bad that she had no hair. A year later, she underwent knee surgery. The following year, she had surgery on her other knee. 

3 years ago, Minnie had a kidney removed. It was after that surgery that Christa and Minnie left the harsh winters of Minnesota for sunny Arizona. There they met Dr. O who has been treating Minnie for the last year and under whose holistic treatment, Minnie has made great progress. She has more energy, bright eyes and is feeling good for the first time in her life!

"BLOAT" The Mother of All Emergencies

 In the bloated stomach, gas and/or food stretches the stomach many times its normal size, causing tremendous abdominal pain. For reasons we do not fully understand, this grossly distended stomach tends to rotate, thus twisting off not only its own blood supply but the only exit routes for the gas inside. Not only is this condition extremely painful but it is also rapidly life-threatening. A dog with a bloated, twisted stomach (more scientifically called gastric dilatation and volvulus) will die in pain in a matter of hours unless drastic steps are taken.  Patient Mike Gang   Mike came into Becky Gang's life at the age of 8 weeks. Mike was born in Colorado and along with his 5 siblings was donated to the Eye Dog Foundation in Phoenix, AZ.   Mike was originally going to be in the breeding program, but that changed and Becky adopted Mike as a family pet.   Mike was a very healthy dog most of his life, with the exception of a sensitive tummy on occasion and "growing pains" in his early years. He became a therapy dog and enjoyed playing ball with residents at a local nursing home.   Mike was about 11 years old at the onset of his "bloat." He died May 1, 2012 just weeks short of his 14th birthday.

Collin and Michelle Jotz, husband and wife, are founding members of Colossal Canine Care dog rescue, based in Nevada.

Colossal is not breed specific and specializes in "unadoptable" dogs (older dogs, large breed dogs, dogs with medical issues, etc.). These are the last chance dogs at the shelters. Colossal was founded as a result of a conversation with the Jotz's veterinarian, Dr. Caroline O'Sullivan, who was the brain behind the idea. Collin and Michelle have three dogs of their own,and are currently fostering two additional Colossal dogs.

Generally, symptoms come on relatively suddenly over days to weeks and can be fairly broad spectrum. The classically exercise-induced weakness may not be seen at all and sometimes megaesophagus is the only sign (as in the focal form of myasthenia gravis).

 

Because swallowing difficulties and regurgitation often are included in the clinical picture, pneumonia resulting from accidental inhalation of saliva, food, or vomit can occur complicating the picture and creating a more serious situation.
