Mel McClave is good at helping people find acceptance with death.  You could call it a gift and she loves what she does.   Having experienced some death of late myself we have a lot to talk about.   Which means we get to talk about me a little bit; and that's kinda fun.  Mel graciously tells us her story, how she helps those who are gonna die plan for their end, and how she helps those who will remain lean in.  There are twists and turns... And of course I have questions...

...Mel McClave prefers the term "End of Life Doula".  And in spite of what you may think, she is all about love.   

Mel has always been the one at the bedside when everyone else has left the room.  Her favorite part of her work is being there at the last breaths.   In her house, no one is safe, they talk about sex, drugs, rock n roll…  and death.  They are encouraged to be their authentic selves… to lean into it and embrace it.   Oh yeah did I mention her 2 kids because they are in the mix too.   

Look - Mel and I have fun, and just because Americans have a long history of avoiding death and not accepting it doesn't mean you shouldn't listen.   She points out that most of the marketing in our country is designed to help you avoid just this fact.   And how the business opportunity of death has affected the European cultures...

How about at a memorial service for the loved one…  When the person who leads the service says…  “I didn’t know this person but.”…  She hates that.  And she graciously explains why.  

Why doesn't Mel want to be a mortician?   She doesn't want to deal with the dead bodies.   She draws the line just on the other side of bathing the body…  “I’m not into corpse disposal!”

She is going to give you advice, tell you what's truly important, give you the two main tips for the end...  And oh so much more.  There is so much to unpack here.  You will laugh, you will absolutely learn something, and you may even cry...

I’m in the middle of Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari…  And that is sussing up some old memories and ideas…  One of my favorite, that we somehow thing that us humans are apart from nature?  And that some people know some dark stuff, and how do they deal with it?

I dig deep into the prayer tool box for a prayer that can help with resentment, cause I have a couple tweaks poking at my serenity…  A little on progress towards  the first “big fish” interview.  And my progress, or imagined there of, in regards to the summit…

Here is a prayer That I have stubbornly not said for decades…  To use on a couple people that shall remain nameless; innocent until proven guilty.  God give (Insert name here________) everything that I want for myself, please give them happiness prosperity and health…  Say it for 2 weeks everyday…  :).  The old dog, I am an old timer…  Still fully hitting the summit wall today damn it!  This will not accelerate the process however :). Ignore the disparate information.  And Damn It there is more work to be done.  Source was like be of service, hang in there!  I’m gaining ground on all fronts.

I go through an exercise called “Beat That Headline”.  Basically you submit your sales copy to a couple of marketing pros/comedians and they shred it to bits.  It’s super fun, a great learning process, and you can’t defend yourself.  They headline they come up with for me is not one that i want!

Log this under: Do you really need to know this?  Bleeding of my covid store of Starbucks insta packs…  It’s the simple things of life.  If I am willing to play with things and ideas even just a little bit more…  How insecurities in one area flair up and effect other areas.  Quantity over quality, vs quality over quantity…  On a whim I ask an outside the network person to be interviewed…  They say yes!  I feel like a giddy high schooler.  Don’t spend the money before the check is cashed!  OMG I might look like a rookie.  Whats the solution?  Keep letting it rip, show no fear, trust the process…  You get to see the real me.

I had previously opened the thought loop of a couple of friends not being supportive of me.  So I go pretty deep here trying to suss out my part… Can I be more supportive?  And the boundaries of toxic people, and if you spot it you got it, and what do we do?

…to cut those people out, that can be pretty aggressive.  What is the boundary, what is their part, what is my part?  I just need to be willing to look, to be that vulnerable, to tackle that humility.  I can’t believe I missed that about myself.  I can feel humiliated and the outside world wouldn’t even know.  Do I really have to do the spot it you got it exercise?  Let’s minimize the uncool thoughts.  How about towards my kids?  I was supportive of a random humans, and the universe responded in kind.
