  • Gloria

Today we are sticking with the 70's. In 1975 Patti Smith released her version of Gloria. Some people heard it and believed that Patti was against Christianity, but wait there is more to the story. Glory is high renown or honor; magnificence or great beauty. Gloria, in Christianity, is pointing that honor to God and ascribing the beauty to God. Take a listen to the song.

  • After Forever

Today might be a little weird for you on this selection but it is from Black Sabbath. In 1971 they put out a song called After Forever. Black Sabbath was always painted as the ones who would drink the blood of the innocent...but their bassist was Catholic and penned this song. Listen to some of the lyrics and they are not trying to hide anything. They are speaking to their audience of metalheads and you might be surprised.

  • What I've Done

We are continuing with the Summer Concert Series theme. Today we have a harder rock song from Linkin Park called What I've Done. I am not sure whether the intent was intently religious connotations but the words used point us to God. Mercy, wash away, forgive are all words used here. Let's dig and see what we can find.

  • I Will Always Love You

It is Friday so I figured I throw out a familiar song with an easy connection. I Will Aways Love You covered by Whitney Houston. It was released on The BodyGuard soundtrack in 1992. The lyrics show that this is a song between people breaking up or departing from each other, but followers of Jesus can be assured that God always loves.

  • You Found Me

Today we are talking about a song released in 2009 by the band The Fray. The song is called You Found Me. There is a lot of good lyrical content in this song. We are only going to scratch the service. It really comes down to us wrestling with the big question of Why do bad things happen to good people? We will discuss that today.

  • Lights Up

Today is a selection from Harry Styles...it was my daughters pick. I picked the song Lights Up from the album Fine Line. I love the words of the chorus and I believe they directly apply to the life of a Follower of Jesus. It even gives us a question at the end of the chorus...Do You Know Who You Are?  We will deal with identity and especially our identity as children of God.

  • I Ran (So Far Away)

Today we are hitting a familiar song with a band that has iconic hair...Flock of Seagulls. The song is called I Ran (So far away) and was a hit in 1982. This song was not written with spiritual elements in mind, but we are going to pull out of it some things that often happens in our relationship with God.

  • Babel

Today we are continuing with more pop songs that have some deep meaning and can even help us as we follow Jesus. We are talking Mumford and Sons and the album is Babel and the title track is Babel. If you are familiar with the Bible at all you will recognize that name in the Book of Genesis. It has some big thoughts about the human heart of discontent. Take a listen!

  • Are You Gonna Go My Way

Today we are hitting our first song in this series: Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz. Lenny called Jesus the ultimate Rock Star. When he wrote this song he wrote it in the voice of Jesus. When you listen to the song listen to it as Jesus would be talking. Fascinating to think a big rock song like this was written in the voice of Jesus.
