Gerritt often talks about the struggles he overcame in his marriage, but he also had to put in a lot of work to repair things with his children. This past weekend Gerritt and his son completed a Spartan Trifecta, a goal they had set together months earlier. This was no small or simple goal, but neither was the process of repairing their relationship. Gerritt says anything is possible if you just keep showing up.

Gerritt recalls earning his first aid merit badge as an eagle scout some 30 years ago. To this day he can remember the first aid order of priority; breathing, bleeding, shock and wound. Gerritt found that using this structured, order of operations approach during his time in law enforcement took a lot of pressure off in chaotic situations. It wasn’t until later he realized he could deploy it in other areas, like his marriage, to start to combat the chaos that had snuck in.

Gerritt is going to answer that question with a personal story, but ultimately it’s about getting through the uncomfortable moments to get where you want to go. How do you know which actions to take? If you follow Gerritt on social media you’ve probably heard about the charity event he recently participated in. Raising money for C.A.S.A. (court appointed special advocates), the event ’11 Summits’ took hikers on a 50+ mile hike, up 11 mountains, in 48 hours. Gerritt shares that he was ready to give up before he was even halfway through, so how did he power through? Sharing in the journey with others that have the same passion and goal was a big part of it.

We’ve all heard how important communication is; are you leaving people in the dark?  “If you don’t give someone the information they need, they will make up something to fill the void.”  How can we be clear in our communication to avoid assumptions? When we leave people to assume, they usually go to the worst case scenario.  Even if it doesn’t seem important to you, if someone takes the time to ask, Gerritt says we should take the time to answer.

As Gerritt explains, anxiety can show up in many areas of our life but taking action is always a great first step. Just remember some actions will have better outcomes than others.
