What did you want to be when you grew up? When I was a kid, I remember some of the top answers being things like police officer, fire fighter and astronaut.
If you ask a kid that today, chances are that their response is going to be something far different than one might expect.
I asked this of my 7-year old nephew recently and his response was something that hardly even existed when I was a kid…a hacker.
How does a 7-year-old kid even have the whereabout to come up with an answer like that?
Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down the importance of sitting down and talking with kids when you have an opportunity.
If you have kids, check out What Do I Want to be When I Grow Up?

Have you ever heard the fable of Plato's Allegory of the Cave?
The short version is a group of people who lived their entire lives chained inside of a dark cave. Their only form of entertainment and interaction was viewing puppet figures that were reflected on the cave wall from in back of them as a fire burned behind them.
These prisoners made up their own names of the puppet characters and essentially dramatized these puppets because to them, this content that they consumed was their total and complete reality.
Fast forward until one day, one of the prisoners got free of their chains and wondered out of the cave only to be met by a blinding light.
After taking a moment's look out, he immediately went back inside of the cave to tell the others.
The others were so consumed with watching the puppets that they couldn't be bothered to hear the story from the one who escaped…the one who saw the real world.
Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton walk through how this is indicative of the same behavior that we are subject to in our media and how we need to be careful when to distinguish reality from the puppets on the wall.

Did you know that on September 29th, 2022, new laws were set in place in the state of California that would allow non-citizens to become police officers?
Yeah…I didn't either.
In a new world where Defunding the Police has become commonplace, this new law also lessens the educational requirements needed to become a police officer.
Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton breaks down some of the concerns and questions that we should all be asking ourselves.
I've included the abstract below. You can read the full SB 960 here.

Have you ever had a boss or superior that made you wonder how in the heck they ever landed their position in the first place?
In our Police, Fire, Military and Families Facebook Group as well as in my coaching practice, I hear stories of poor leadership all of the time.
If you were to poll first responders and ask what their biggest complaint about the workplace is, I would venture to guess that Admin is right up there with the brutality shed upon them by the media.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said, "You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him."
Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down leadership in the workplace and how we can all do better at having the conversations that nobody seems to want to have.

When you think of physical fitness, do you picture what the inside of a gym looks like?
Yesterday, I was mucking the stalls and stacking firewood and my Oura ring told me that I burnt 254 calories in one hour.
To give you some context…
I've read that a 150-pound woman can burn 124 calories just vacuuming the house for 30-minutes.
The thing is, we don't consider all activity as fitness and this is a really unhealthy way of thinking.
Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down why IT ALL MATTERS and how you should be tracking all of your fitness…
Not just your steps and not just your time spent in the gym.

My friend recently married his bride in the beautiful area of Sri Lanka which has a population of about 22 million people (compare that to our over 350 million in the United States).
This is an area where most people live modest lives in villages. The hard workers have the means to get them what they need but it is not anything comparable to American living standards.
My friend's mother-in-law was surprised when she was told that she didn't have to freeze in her hotel room any longer and that she was allowed to adjust the thermostat in her hotel room.
Imagine my friend's surprise when his mother-in-law also didn't know that she was allowed to use her hotel bedding or what it was like to teach her how to use an escalator at the mall.
While it might sound silly to someone so accustomed to these things, it's a great wakeup call for us to all remember how grateful we are to have the accommodations that we do…
Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down the importance of understanding how naïve we are all to an extent and how this might be beneficial the next time that we find ourselves in disagreement with someone.

Roy Baumeister wrote a book called Willpower: Rediscovering Our Greatest Strength and he is one of the world's leading experts on the study and science of willpower. He tells us that people who use their willpower the most intelligently are the people who have figured out how temptation plays into their willpower.
Roy explains that the wise among us play offense with their willpower and not defense.
And example of this that is given in the book is to 'buy your willpower at the store.' Essentially, it is easier to choose not to toss those cookies and candies in your cart than it is to refuse eating them at home. I mean, who wants to waste food, right?
In today's episode, Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down ways that we can induce healthy temptations and what we should all be thinking about when it comes to our own willpower and discipline practice.

We all know (and hopefully have personal experience with) about falling in love but have you ever heard of standing in love?
While most people have heard that U.S. divorce rates are over 50%, research shows that it varies from state-to-state and is more in the 40%-50% range.
When we fall in love, that butterfly feeling has a way of inducing behavior in ways that tend to dwindle down as our relationship evolves.
After all, it takes effort to show someone that you're the person that they should spend the rest of their life with.
Eventually, there are many individuals in a relationship who either don't feel that same effort or, if they are honest, are not giving the same level of effort.
In today's episode, Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton discuss how to avoid this.

Have you ever been the type of person to say something like, 'I don't care what other people think of me?'
Science tells us that we are hardwired to want acceptance. When you think back to the primal days of hunting and gathering, we needed to show our contributions in order to be accepted in our tribe and this is ultimately how we survived.
In her book The How of Happiness by Sonja Lyubomirsky, a study was done by her team on a group of grade-school students. She had one half of the group perform random acts of kindness each week for six weeks. They took the other half and did nothing with them; they were the control group.
By the end of the study, the kids who did something nice for other people were not only happier than the control group…They were also more 'popular' than they were in the beginning.
Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton discuss the importance of identifying ways that you can be accepted by your current tribe and why it's so important to your overall happiness.

How is your New Year's resolution panning out for you? There is a good chance that you make up a part of the 80% statistic that has failed at maintaining their New Year's Resolution come February.
Did you know that there's an actual word for going HARD in the beginning only to find yourself falling off of the bandwagon shortly after?
It's a word in Sanskrit referred to as arambhashura. It means, to be a hero in the beginning.
We are all guilty of this and it doesn't take a New Year's resolution to find ourselves here.
There's a new book, project, job or relationship that we set our focus on and we tend to go ALL IN. The problem with this is that we fail to see the speed bumps along the way; we don't plan for the unexpected.
Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down how to avoid the burnout and recognize the discovery and growth that exists behind those brick walls.
