  • E599 What To Do If You Married A Pedophile

Did you know that in the United States, we are nearing almost 800,000 registered sex offenders?

Studies show that over 90% of these individuals have sexually assaulted someone that they know.

In today's episode, Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton open up about a candid conversation that we had with the ex-wife of a pedophile.

Check out My Daddy the Pedophile, A Memoir here.

While we have discussed the work that so many are doing to help to put these predators behind bars, this is the first time that we have shared a conversation with someone who exists outside of the closed cased.

Many people suffer in silence while existing outside of the crimes that people they once loved have committed.

It's important for us to share dialogue with everyone who has experienced trauma from a sexual assault, be it directly or the vicarious trauma that some experience after these types of truths come to light.

Join us as we open up the conversation.

If you are a family member of someone who is a pedophile, there is direct support for you. Click the link here or call 1-800-A-FAMILY.

  • E598 What Your Brain's Stranger Pattern Can Teach You About Your Future Self

Did you know that when your brain is hooked up to an MRI machine and you start thinking of a stranger, there's a 'stranger pattern' that lights up? In fact, we have neuro patterns for just about everything.

Something really awesome happens when you run the same scan and start thinking about yourself. There's a different path that lights up called the 'self-center.'

In his book The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self Control, Walter Mischel walks us through this study and what we can learn about our future self.

It turns out that having a connection to the person that you want to be 10 years from now has a direct connection on our relationship to willpower and impulsivity.

Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down ways to get closer to your future self and how there's something that we can all do today in order to make us more familiar with who we want to be 10 years from now.

  • E597 The #1 Secret You Should Know If You Have Bad Genes

Have you ever thought that there was something wrong with you and you chopped it up to having bad genes (check out Dirty Genes: A Breakthrough Program to Treat the Root Cause of Illness and Optimize Your Health by Ben Lynch)?

For some people, this could be a medical ailment and for others, it could be more about how they look or even how capable (or incapable) they believe they are with muscle building.

Epigenetics means 'above our genes.' In simple terms, we are learning more and more each day about the ways that our environment and our behavior can change the way that our genes work.

Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton talk about why this can be one of the most powerful ways to change our lives…and how there's something that you can start doing today in order to improve your genetic expression.

  • E596 Here's What To Do When Anticipation Gives You Anxiety

Has there ever been something that you know you had to do but you were either putting it off or you built up anticipatory anxiety before the 'thing' actually happened?

Think about the last time that you had a job interview, doctor's appointment or maybe when you didn't exactly feel like hitting the gym.

In her book A Mind for Numbers, Barbara Oakley teaches us how to learn.

It's often new/complex material or circumstances that intimidate us but learning something new or embarking on a new journey doesn't have to be as daunting as it might seem.

In fact, there's a process for getting around this altogether.

Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down how the pain is in the anticipation and not the doing.

  • E594 Do You Have The Truman Show Delusion?

Did you know that there are people who actually believe that they are living in a staged reality show?

There are normal (or not so normal) people like you and I who have been studied and shown to suffer from the delusion that they are being watched by cameras and are in some sort of television show when they really aren't at all.

This is what is called the Truman Show Delusion.

I was watching Top Gun and got to thinking about actors who will dive so deep into character that they too may suffer from the same delusions.

How is one to distinguish from actually experiencing an event such as soaring through the sky in a P-51 Mustang as a fighter pilot versus starting in a movie as a fake character who did the very same thing?

Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton discuss this delusion and what we can do to stay as far away from it as possible.

  • E593 SCREW Your New Year's Resolutions And Try This Instead

Have you ever wanted something SO bad that just daydreaming about it made you feel giddy?

Jim Rohn discusses a really cool concept to help us finally get to the goals that we want in life called Pull Power (Check out The Art of Exceptional Living here).

Essentially, we can imagine our wildly important goal as this heavy ass bad that is 25 feet away from us.

Pretend that there is a rope tied to the bag and at the other end of that rope is you, staring straight at your goal.

Now, picture you sitting down and digging your heels into the ground as you slowly start to pull the bad closer to you.

    It takes time.

    It's hard.

    You get tired.

    Your body gets sore.

But you keep tugging until eventually, that goal is finally within arm's reach.

This visual understanding of how our goals work is pretty awesome; however, there could be a nasty magician that could place a cloak on your wildly important goals from time to time.

Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton share what we need to do whenever we find that something or someone gets in the way of us achieving success for ourselves.

  • E592 Are You Making This Mistake With Your Chores?

When was the last time that you knew you had to do something but you really didn't want to do it?

Chances are that there's are several things in the day for each of us that we would rather not do. But there's a way to get you to actually want to do all of these things.

In The Joy Choice by Michelle Segar, she explains that it all boils down to knowing what the right why is.

By doing this, we can turn our chores into gifts.

For example, telling yourself that you HAVE to go to the gym versus living in the understanding that you GET to go to the gym should bring on an instant shift in energy.

Segar suggests that we make the connection between the decision to engage in a behavior and the way that we will feel now versus the way we might feel some day.

An example of this that is shared in the book is a set of participants who were surveyed at the gym and asked why they were working out.

Those that responded with answers along the lines of 'because it makes me feel better each day when I exercise' had a much higher success rate for health and fitness versus those who answered with responses such as, 'I want to lose 50 pounds.'

Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down ways to see through the big picture so that you can enjoy the colors as you create your very own masterpiece.

  • E591 Repetition Is NOT The Key

What is the ONE thing that you are SUPER good at? Would you consider yourself an expert at it?

In his book Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise, Anders Ericsson shares that we all have the gift of greatness but that we need to learn purposeful practice.

Some experts will tell us that accomplishing 10,000 hours of one given thing will make us a master at it.

Anders explains that more experience doesn't make you better.

If you play the same song on a guitar 1000 times, it doesn't make you better at playing the guitar, it simply makes you better at playing that one song.

Instead, there's a process for improvement and it goes like this:

    1. Have well defined goals
    2. Focus during your practice
    3. Have a process for feedback
    4. Exit your comfort zone

It is also suggested that we find ways to sprinkle on motivation like accountability or prizes.

Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break this down into ways that we can all apply to our lives.

  • E590 Are You Suffering From The iPhone Effect?

Would it be possible for you to take your phone and put it away completely in another room, shut off for an entire hour while you had a game night with your family?

(Check out my favorite game night game here)

    Why or why not?

Scientists took a group of people into a room and they put a random phone on the table that they were sitting at.

They took a second group of people and placed them in a different room with a notepad on the table instead of the phone.

The group with the notepad reported significantly higher levels of interaction with one another versus those with the phone who reported dramatically diminished interactions in comparison. They suffered from the iPhone Effect.

The mere presence of a phone, even if it isn't yours, has been studied to show attention deficit and distractions time and time again. The crazy thing is that the phone doesn't even have to be turned on!

Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down ways to make this a part of your normal routine.
