This week, we are talking about music…sorta. We’ve noticed lately (for whatever reason) we’ve not been able to listen to or watch as much of the “entertainment” we used to in the past. Whether it’s music that has negative or derogatory lyrics or if it’s a movie or TV show that doesn’t fit into the direction we feel we want to go into, we have been increasingly unable to consume things that seem to be getting more and more toxic. Add to this the conversation Jermaine Dupri got started recently and we had to air out how we felt about the entire environment as we see it.

This week, we're talking about so-called "cancel culture". This conversation was brought on by an unlikely source: Chrisette Michelle. Neither of us keep up with daily updates of popular culture, but it seems as though Chrisette is still cancelled(?) and it got us to thinking what sense the whole idea of "cancelling" someone even makes. Although, yes we agree, some people definitely need support pulled from them, what are the rules? How long is the penalty supposed to be for? We have so many questions...

This week, we talking about the CROWN Act (Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair). California lawmakers have passed a bill to protect black employees and students by outlawing discrimination against people who wear Afros, braids, dreadlocks and twists. We discussed the law and what we think this law will mean for black people in general, but black women in particular moving forward in the workplace and in schools. We also talked about how the need for this law shines a light on respectability politics that are the norm here in the US and whether we think this will make a difference in that respect or not.

We've come a pretty long way in our personal financial journey (over the last 12 years) and as a result, it's given us the opportunity to have more disposable income. Basically, we're shopping more than we've ever been able to and felt like we should take a step back and take inventory of where (and to whom) that "extra" money was going. The term "buy black" is thrown around all the time, but we felt like the conversation is sometimes one-sided: Someone black telling someone else black that they should buy black and if they don't why that's stupid (or whatever). You rarely hear anything from the people who don't or aren't sure how to go about truly buying black. We admitted in this episode we don't buy black as much as we could/should, but there are (was) reasons (excuses) for it. So this episode is just us being transparent about what we think the reasons are for us and many other black people not supporting black businesses. We also tried to figure out if black support would ever reach the level of a black economic liberation in our lifetime and if so, how.

In the last 20 years or so, we've seen a severe reduction in music instrumentation in mainstream music and we wondered if we'd ever see it return. We talked about why we think it decreased in the first place and gave our opinions on what we think it'd take for that level of talent to come back.

This week, we had a discussion with our good friend, Mike. This wasn’t necessarily a planned guest spot in the traditional sense. We briefly had a conversation about the Central Park Five case and the Netflix documentary “When The see US” (which none of us has seen at the time of recording) an decided it could be an interesting conversation. So here’s the quick backstory: None of us have seen the Netflix series, but all of us have seen the Ken Burns documentary on the case. This was by design because we have no plans on this being a Netflix review, but simply a jump-off point for a larger conversation.
