This week we had a disagreement while watching Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing”. We decided, rather than discuss it off the mic, why not just talk it out on air and record our difference of opinion. The conversation took us from the movie to the #TakeEmDownNOLA movement. Although, I think we both agreed on the principal of organizing and accomplishing a goal, we had slightly different takes on what the effects of the statues coming down may (or may not) mean for the future of New Orleans and, on a broader scale, this country.

This past week we witnessed the dragging of Lil’ Bow Wow on social media in regards to his Instagram post that suggested he was taking a private jet when he in fact was using his Skymiles on Delta. It got us to thinking: Why is being phony so popular and pervasive now? Both on social media and in our day-to-day lives, we’ve been coming into contact with people…grown people,mind you, that have decided the life of a phony is the route for them. We were both bombarded with a few examples over the course of this last week and decided we had to address it. From the internet to the church, we’re calling out all the phonies on this one!

Essentially, the prison system is congruent with the slave system that built this country and we thought it was important to examine a few aspects of how this came to be, how (and who) it's affecting and also a few features of this machine that's basically legalized slavery in the current day. Because we wanted to make sure we treated this subject with the respect it deserved, we didn't rush it. Will the current administration slow down or accelerate the influx of slaves into the system? (You KNOW the answer). Listen in while we try to dismantle this complex subject and give our take on why America can't seem to be honest and give up slavery once and for all.

The opioid use in America has spread to a more affluent (and frankly, whiter) demographic and we’re noticing the response has become more subdued than in the past and has been more about prevention and treatment than incarceration. Why the shift? Is this going to produce more of a humane response for all or just a select few? Also, how does marijuana legalization factor into all of this? We attempt to answer these question and give our views on how we think this’ll effect us going forward in the current administration.

If you haven’t yet seen it, the ad features a diverse set of women who (presumably) Shea Moisture now wants to participate in patronizing their LINE of products (emphasis on LINE because Shea Moisture has an entire line of products from shampoos to soaps to lip balms)! Black women are outraged because from their perspective, Shea Moisture owes black women their loyalty in exchange for their continued support. Do they have a point? Other may say, Shea Moisture is a business like any other and the objective is to be profitable. Hmm…they might have a point too. Let’s debate this.

This week, we’re talking about music. In a recent episode of Oprah’s “Where Are They Now”, Monica gave fans an inside look at her home life, while she reflected on her career. During the episode, she mentioned wanting to stay true to herself when making albums and not simply creating music for popularity. It brought up the question: Is R&B going extinct? Will there be a continuation of the R&B music tradition or will the music die out? We talk about some of our favorite R&B artists that may help the genre continue and also we talk about some of the artists and R&B songs that we feel aren’t helping the art form move forward.
