  • Tales By Tom - Memories to Live With 004

Welcome to Tales By Tom. Today we continue with the series of short stories from the pen of Tom Cagley Sr titled “Memories to Live With”. In this series, Tom explores how events and how we remember those events shape our lives. This series has eight installments beginning with a story that asks us to thinks of the scars we have and concludes with a story titled “The Water’s Edge.” Listen to all eight! Each story asks you to look inside yourself and examine the journey you are on!

Today, we have two stories, an overview of the stories are:

Kids to Mom. I asked the Pre-K and Kindergarten children questions from a list of 10 I'd developed. I did it one child at a time. Then I typed the answers so that every child would have a special something in their Mom's day packet.

    and . . .

Where did it begin? The plaque has a final resting spot and will be unveiled June 2, 2016 at our 60th reunion. Three Cheers to the few of us!!!

Last year, my father, Tom Cagley Sr published a new book titled, I Was Your Son: A Troubled Journey. The book is a view into Tom Cagley Sr's soul. When asked why should anyone read this book ? He answered, "Because the end effect is restorative and invigorating and because everyone who’s ever had a father like this wants to believe there is a happy way out."

A recent review stated it even more powerfully, "I love this book; it is a very telling, touching story of one man's troubled past with his father who obviously had problems of his own. He had no love for his son in his being beyond childhood. I feel so very much for Tom; he was disconnected from his Dad for no good reason; never able to see or talk to him again---not his problem, but scared him none the less.

This story is a lesson in how not to act as a father. His father did not apply the story of the prodigal son in the bible; that is the kind of love we should have for our children. I pray that in telling his story, this book will help Tom heal and go forward and help those who read it never to make the same mistake, as his father."

Today, we have two stories, an overview of the stories are: Gray hair and what it taught me. To be patient, for sure, but I wasn't always that way. That came after the "trek" was finished, where I could watch an apple roll away from a spilled garbage bag and slowly follow gravity's pull down the driveway and into the gutter --- and not chase it. I was surprised.

    and

Should I go to my reunion? I've never been to a high school reunion. But what did I think about my 60th from Notre Dame?

Sue Brown's Book. The discovery started so innocently --- at a wedding shower --- with our Huey as a facilitator.

    Today we have two stories

Continuing the Maureen O'Hara story. For me, it began in 1943. Then it was April 2015, and a stranger called. Then it was October that same year, and in the mail was a signed copy of the only book she ever wrote. The stranger had signed it, as had Maureen. He told me it was the last one she had signed before she died earlier that month.

    and

She wrote to her church, putting words on paper which know no time.

A love story in a different time frame. It's not like I have a writer in my background, but a bus ride brought two people together on Jackie's side of the family.

    and

Why love alone will never win this prize --- and that's okay with me. Though I have matured, overall I hate to lose at anything but in this contest, I am fine with that.
