Welcome to Tales By Tom. Today we continue the series titled "Places Near the Rainbow's End." In this series my father ruminates on life using places that have made an impression on his life. These stories are influenced by places as far apart as Baton Rouge and Goose Bay, Canada. Whether a story about a stolen car or saloon doors, each story will leave you with something to think about!
Today, we have two stories. There synopsizes are:
Saloon doors---and one particular saloon. I was happy to finally be in one. I asked for Kitty and Chester the first thing---and the odd thing was that they knew exactly who I meant, even if they did shrug their shoulders.
and
The Deal at the Charlotte Airport. Strange things happen to me when I travel; some end up being matters of life and death. Really!
It was July. Things happen in the summer besides getting impossibly hot here in Southern, LA. It's a good month to get past, if you know what I mean, so you can rest up for August. This July made the following month seem like a wonder that might never happen.
Have you purchased a copy of the book my father, Tom Cagley Sr published? The book is titled, I Was Your Son: A Troubled Journey. The book is a view into Tom Cagley Sr's soul. When asked why should anyone read this book ? He answered, "Because the end effect is restorative and invigorating and because everyone who’s ever had a father like this wants to believe there is a happy way out."
A recent review stated it even more powerfully, "I love this book; it is a very telling, touching story of one man's troubled past with his father who obviously had problems of his own. He had no love for his son in his being beyond childhood. I feel so very much for Tom; he was disconnected from his Dad for no good reason; never able to see or talk to him again---not his problem, but scared him none the less.
This story is a lesson in how not to act as a father. His father did not apply the story of the prodigal son in the bible; that is the kind of love we should have for our children. I pray that in telling his story, this book will be help Tom heal and go forward and help those who read it never to make the same mistake, as his father."Buy "Was Your Son: A Troubled Journey" on Amazon http://ow.ly/ug4ru

Anatomy of a Fashion Show. We/I did a lot of these in my 15 years at Goudchaux's, none more significant than our first one in New Orleans in 1982 after buying the Maison Blanche stores there. This is how we did it.
and
Indian Reservation. My oldest son and podcaster extraordinaire took a trip to India. On the way home, the plane made an emergency stop at Goose Bay. "This is your captain speaking," he heard over the intercom. Then he found out that two mistakes don't make a right in any language.

Today, we have two stories. There synopsizes are:Entering Notre Dame. Three of us came from different worlds and each got into ND. None were by hook or crook, but there was a lot of good fortune involved and maybe a blessing or two from some higher up than any of us.
and
From an older book to a sermon in Charlotte. The book was The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The sermon, 25 years after the book, was called "The Seven Habits of Highly Joyful People." I think you will see similarities.

What about Mansfield, Ohio? I have never been there, but my car has, the one I left unlocked in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Boardman, Ohio. The police found the guy who took it. HE was a recent release from the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield who needed a ride to Florida.

Welcome to Tales By Tom. Today we conclude the series titled "Quesitons to Ask and Answer." In this series my father challenges the listeners to contemplate a wide range of questions generated from experience and observation. Each question is a uniuqe glimpse into a life in our times. Next week we begin the series "Places Near the Rainbow's End."
Today we have two stories
Writing about my father's early life. I have written much on him but in 2012, I began a new novel, telling a story about his part-time job while attending Minneapolis Business college. He was a teenager, who'd grown up on a farm in Wisconsin. This is who he was from 1908 until the Crash ... a much different man than I came to know. I am happy for the perspective.
He was busted---in a nice way. Yes? It was all about a trip to New Orleans and a secret my son Nick was trying to keep from his wife Jen. He never knew what she already knew---but she was happy anyway.

How did I get it? In truth, I never found out, BUT I found out how valuable it was after some searching.
Is it that we should love people and not things? Walter's death taught me a lesson. So did Emir the Caliph from the 10th century. I hope I have it right now.

Questions I'd have loved to ask and a legacy I'd like to leave. The questions I have about my parents will never be answered...some are only B roll for background anyway. So what I have to do so that my offspring and theirs don't have the problem I have is to leave the answers behind in word and pictures. That would work, right?
I have asked around. What is rebellion? From whence cometh it? I got a lot of answers, but I like mine best.

Who invented that? Who invented the WAVE we see at football games? More importantly, who invented the draft that took people into service for wartime?
There's a fine line or is it a thin line or does it matter? We see them all during our lives but the one between life and death is the most mysterious and elusive. Do we know when that shows up?

Was I baptized or not? How would I find out with everyone dead? As persistent as I am, what could I do? The only answer, as in any search, is to start with what you know, no matter how small the evidence is.
How did I lose a day? It was August 12, 2013. I wrote in my diary on August 11. My next entry was on Tuesday, August 13. Where did Monday go?

The Three-Day Chicken. It could be the perfect solution to those awkward periods of silence between two parents.
I wonder how we looked out there. The surgery to remove the cataract in my right eye was very successful and my neighbor decided to help me out the next day. I could clearly see him going back and forth in my front yard.
