  • Tales By Tom - Windows On The World 008

Welcome to Tales By Tom. This is the eigth installment of Tom Cagley Sr's short story collections entitled, “Windows On The World.”

We have two stories in this edition.  They are:

Living past 75 years of age; What a blessing it is, as long as you can remember where you’ve been, and feel eminently sad for those who can’t. So who cares if you can’t remember the names of all of Charlie’s Angels?

You’ve been there but you’re not: You can be in one place and five minutes away in the same city, the world is coming down on someone. You’re there, so near, but you’re not really.

I encourage you to provide feedback on these stories or any of the earlier shorts by email at [email protected] or by voicemail at 1 206 339 5456.

  • Tales By Tom - Windows On The World 007

Welcome to Tales By Tom. This is the seventh installment of Tom Cagley Sr's short story collections entitled, “Windows On THe World.”

This week we have two stories

Bonjour Tristesse: It was a first novel of a talented young French girl which was sent to me by a girlfriend in 1955 who’d saddened by my departure. As I read what she wrote inside 57 years, I wonder what happened to Chicago’s Marianne Bykowski.

Sail on! Sail on! I certainly practiced Columbus’ speech enough, then gave it without any hiccups and was rewarded for my birthday with a radio. Which I didn’t see again for a half century.

We have two stories in this edition.  They are:

How long have you been working? : It’s a fair question to ask an applicant, but where does he or she start with for the answer? I would say it could be a make or break response.

You’ve been there but you’re not: You can be in one place and five minutes away in the same city, the world is coming down on someone. You’re there, so near, but you’re not really.

We have two stories in this edition.  They are:

ATravels with Tommy: Trips to and from my son’s home in Cleveland never lack for excitement, whether it’s a drug bust, a girl in a T-shirt, or an obnoxious flight attendant.

A night at the Plaza: I couldn’t help it---he swung at me --- and I reacted the only way I knew how. But I still got to P.J. Clarke’s before they closed.

Welcome to Tales By Tom. This is the third installment of Tom Cagley Sr's short story collections entitled, “Windows On THe World.”

We have two stories in this edition.  They are:

Austrian highs and lows: We went to Austria in July. We had a lot of fun, but had we not been physically fit to endure the cobblestones and the “walks and elevation changes of same,” shall we say, we’d have been in serious trouble.

The soundtrack of my life:  The songs I grew up with and the songs I lived with (and still do) have stayed with me forever. Nostalgia? Maybe, but they certainly are part of the fabric of my life--- and there are ones I want you to hear at my funeral, too.

Welcome to Tales By Tom. This is the second installment of Tom Cagley Sr's short story collections entitled, “Windows On THe World.”

Commencement: Commencement Exercises, regardless of the year, provide great “bully pulpits” for the speakers but too often they are just that ---exercises that don’t even warm you up.

A destination wedding: My son Tom and his wife Barb have a daughter named Meghan. She and Matt decided to have a wedding out in the woods in Millboro, VA. It was an experience we wouldn’t forget, even before we got there.

Welcome to Tales By Tom. This is the first installment of Tom Cagley Sr's short story collections entitled, “Windows On THe World.”

A wonderful day in the neighborhood: We all get surprised seeing a familiar face totally out of context, for the first time in a few years and not recognizing the face or anything else about her. I hope you reacted better than I did once. I still shudder.

Jet-lag twice: Getting a good night’s rest before going overseas is a must for counteracting the effects of jet-lag. We were ready and pumped. But Continental had other plans for us.

Story 16.  How great thou art: Yes, it is a hymn, but there were other voices in my ear this day, not a tune, but someone sending me a message to remind of how great He really is and that you should heed all of His warnings regardless of the form in which they come to you. Thank the Lord!

Story 17.  Epilogue to Great and Simple.  Barb Cagley read the Epilogue

  • Tales by Tom - Plain and Simple 008

Welcome to Tales By Tom. This is the eigth installment of Tom Cagley Sr's short story collections entitled, “Plain and Simple.”

    The stories  . . .

Story 14. The Bookman: I found a lot of treasures in the pages of the ABA magazine and was able to buy many. Isn’t it sad that I remember the ones I missed just as well? And I don’t mean just books but true one-of-a-kind treasures you wouldn’t ever see displayed on a library shelf.

Story 15. It’s an opinion: there’s an article in the magazine section of the New York Times every Sunday. I read it faithfully. Some are not worth time, but it gets to be a habit with me. This one is written by Ariel Kaminer, a self-styled ethicist. I have written about two that caught and kept my attention, first word to last. What would you have done in either case mentioned?
