Tales from the Drum episodes
- Pratchips 52-- Soul Music: That Music With Rocks In
It’s all about the music, which is wild music that doesn’t belong on the Disc. It’s arrived, though, and it’s going to take Death himself to show it the door. Between times a lot of people are going to buy guitars and learn how to play “Pathway to Paradise,” Susan will have to step in for her grandfather (and become enamored of Buddy), and the Dean will paint his room black. Hello Ankh-Morpork!

Thanks for listening.3 min - Pratchips 51-- Soul Music: Wandering Shops
Imp Y Celin, better known as Buddy, gets his guitar from a strange shop which means to be selling mostly musical junk. The stuff that’s not junk is magical. The magical items all have numbers chalked on them. On Buddy’s guitar is a faint chalkmark, I. Oh my.

Glod Glodsson, the dwarf with the horn, is the professional musician in the Band with Rocks In. He doesn’t care about being famous, except among other musicians. He just wants to play music and get paid for it.

Thanks for listening.3 min - Pratchips 49-- Soul Music
Yes, it is Soul Music this week. Death faces an existential crisis while something that is not supposed to be on the Disc yet shows up, and the Music with Rocks In craze is born. And, as usual when Granddad goes AWOL, it’s up to Susan Sto Helit to try to deal with it.

Thanks for listening.3 min - Pratchips 47-- Carpe Jugulum: Don'tgonearthe Castle
The Magpyr family castle, the scene for the climax of Carpe Jugulum, is an interesting place. There are lots of readily-available things for fighting vampires. When the Old Master returns, he also had Igor put up some new signage, and a fun fair, to attract visitors.

Thanks for listening.3 min - Pratchips 46-- Carpe Jugulum: Mightily Oats
Mightily Oats gets some lessons in faith and belief from Granny Weatherwax, and is instrumental in getting Granny to Don’tgonearthe Castle so she can defeat the Magpyr clan. Not bad for a guy who is of two minds about everything.

Thanks for listening.3 min - Pratchips 45-- Carpe Jugulum
Our book of the week is Carpe Jugulum, which I think is one of the most feel-good reads in all the books. From the bumbling Count Magpyr to Agnes, Magrat, Nanny and Granny joining forces, to the introduction of the Wee Free Men, this one makes me smile all the way through.

Thanks for listening.3 min - Season 10 episode 9– Witches and Wizards-- in love?!?
An expansion of the pairs theme from last week, you might say. Sort of. We consider witches and wizards as couples (Mustrum and Esme), and that leads to a discussion of witches in cities, and wizards in the countryside. With exceptions, fish out of water in both cases.
Granny does just fine in Ankh-Morpork, and Ridcully loves the out of doors—shooting at it, at least. Coincidence? You decide.
We have a new email address: [email protected]. I’m working on transitioning all our MGP (Medieval Gnome Productions) related email there. Send us an email at the new addy—you never know what might happen!
And, PLEASE send me some new questions for Granny! You can ask her anything.

23 min - Pratchips 44– Snuff: The Wonderful Fanny
The climax of Snuff takes place aboard a riverboat; a paddle-wheeler (driven by oxen) named The Wonderful Fanny. This shows that you should not jump to conclusions, especially embarrassing ones.

About Tales from the Drum
From the publisher's feed
On the first, second, and third Friday of every month, it’s Tales From the Drum—the Mended Drum, that is. We also bring you three-minute long mini-episodes, cleverly entitled Pratchips (like potato…
chips, see?) every Monday-Thursday. All of these are (usually) about the places, spaces, races, and other words that end in aces of the Discworld, that pizza-shaped place (but no anchovies) that rides through space on the backs of the massive elephants Tubul, Berilia, Jerakeen and Great T’Phon, which themselves stand atop the 10,000 mile-long world Turtle, A’Tuin. (According to the dwarfs, there was once a Fifth Elephant, which slipped of A’Tuin’s carapace and crashed into the Disc. But the dwarfs can be funny that way.) Obviously, a place such as this could exist only every normal curve must have its outliers, where the fabric of reality is thin, and magic is an everyday—well, reality. Of course, it was actually the late Sir Terry Pratchett, OBE, who created the Discworld. He chronicled those places, spaces, etc. in 41 Discworld novels. In 500 years, he will probably be the only 20th-century author who is still being read. Seriously. He was that good. He was also incredibly prolific. In a span of 32 years, he wrote 70 books. They’ve sold northward of 50 million copies, last I saw. He was knighted in 2008 by Queen Elizabeth II. Sir Terry passed away in 2015 from a rare form of early onset Alzheimer’s disease. GNU Terry Pratchett. If you don’t understand that, you can find out about it in Going Postal. Also, il miglior fabbro. That’s from T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land.” But you knew that. Thanks for listening—and mind how you go! GNU Terry Pratchett
