My Tangled in Tudor Times’ time traveling heroine, Bella Salas, keeps me on the trail of Tudor tidbits. This month I consider what survival meant for Henry VIII’s final Renaissance queen, Kathryn Parr, as well as beautiful objects associated with that strong minded, well-educated lady.

My January through June 2023 episodes are inspired by a visit to NYC. There I took in the Musical Six on Broadway, and visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibit The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England. That same exhibit recently landed in San Francisco’s Legion of Honor Museum (FAMSF). It closes in September 24 of 2023.

TT19 - Tragic Heroine or Ignoble Opportunist - Did Jane Seymour Lay Plans?

Tangled in Tudor Times’ heroine Bella Salas keeps me on the trail of Tudor tidbits. This month I look for relics of Jane Seymour and consider her character. Was she the self-effacing, obedient lady-in-waiting who submitted to Henry VIII? Or was she a husband-hunting schemer who gave Anne Boelyn a bad rap and drew Henry into her arms?

Tangled in Tudor Times’ Bella Salas keeps me on the trail of  Tudor tidbits. In this episode I look for relics of The Other Woman, Anne Boleyn. Did Anne’s little neck have a chance of surviving her marriage with Henry VIII? His battle to dispose of his first wife, Katherine of Aragon, resulted in a seven year courtship of Anne. He was crazy about her, as long as she kept up her Don’t-do-a-thing-till-you- get- that- ring- plan. And then what?

In Tangled in Tudor Times, our favorite time traveler Bella Salas is inspired by the pomegranate badge chosen by Henry VIII’s first wife, Katherine of Aragon, to make plans for a fusion-fashion design of her own. Bella’s not the only maker to find inspiration in the art works around her. On a recent trip to New York City, I was inspired by the musical Six, and the fantastic Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibit, The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England. Both had me looking for relics of Henry VIII’s six wives. There’s so much to enjoy and learn from my trip, that I plan to keep this hunt for Tudor wives going for six podcast episodes.

When she’s unexpectedly transported through time to the Elizabethan era, Bella has a chance to get up close and personal with Tudor fashions, fabrics, and embellishments. Like Bella Salas, in my novel Tangled in Tudor Times, all of us time travelers need to learn not to laugh at the goofy names and styles of men’s clothing in the Elizabethan era. What’s the difference between these manly garments? Test your knowledge. Peafowl or Peas’ cod? Cockles, Jelly, or Bombast? Love-locks or Love Apples?

In Tangled in Tudor Times Bella Salas has her own reaction to Tudor roses...Masses of flowering bushes trailed along the path. They hung over gates and dangled from arbors and walkways. Beneath the arch of an ancient, paneled doorway, a wide-petaled crimson beauty was just opening. The heavy scent of damasks consumed us.
