In a previous episode, I said "Data Tells and Stories Sell." In this episode I'm picking up that thread to look at how and why stories can help you become a more effective coach for your team.

Last week, I lead a training session for new and aspiring leaders, and some of our discussion reminded me of an issue that many leaders – especially front-line leaders – confront on a regular basis. Front-line leaders frequently deal with changes, policies, and procedures that they did not create. These issues create constraints on what you can do in your leadership role, and it's tempting to both focus on and get frustrated by these limitations – to focus on what you cannot do. In this episode, I'm proposing a way to look at these constraints so that they don't drive you crazy.

In talking with a friend of mine recently (Dr. Ashley Perkins-Shogren), I learned a phrase to better describe a communication pattern that I've been trying to describe for years. She is a mental health advocate, and you can see her TEDx talk on YouTube. In this episode, I'm exploring the idea of person first language. Thanks Ashley!

There are many things you can do to improve your communication skills, and there is one thing that trumps every other strategy or tactic that I can think of. In this episode, I'll share that one thing. The thing is definitely something you can – starting today – to make a difference in all of your communications. It's not really that difficult. You just have to decide to do it.
