Talkin' Schmit

Ryan "RJ" Johnson checks in with stories about growing up in the under rated Fresno skateboard scene with the likes of AP, the Paez bros, Tom Knox, Karma and more. We catch up big time, it's been over 20 years! Subject matter ranges from Consolidated days, New Deal, turning pro, his two cover shots, old days with McKenney and Panch and much more... Great to reconnect with Ryan and I think you can hear that in this episode.

Early days in SF at Playland, Santa Cruz Skateboards, entering contests in the 70's, skating Upland or not getting respect, playing music and leading his band the Gentle Orchestra, shooting with Mofo, and the era pre-handrail are just a few of the things Spidey and I discuss this week. Vincent Alvarez was the first skateboarder on the Dickies program. He got on Chocolate Skateboards, turned pro, and had the first part in "Pretty Sweet". That’s just the tip of the iceberg though. What’s the most blood he’s seen, how long has he been playing drums, what does Patlanta Saves mean??? Whether it was meeting S.A.D. at a young age or seeing Jimmy Wilkins land his first bump to bar with Tony Hawk; Vincent has stories for days. Sam Smyth said it in his first impression, “Vinnie’s the fuckin’ man-just ask anyone that knows him. He’s the best!”
