My guest today is Serica McLean, who has an alopecia condition called Lichen Planopilaris. In the first episode of this podcast, we talked about the same condition where hair loss was extremely rapid over a couple of weeks. In Serica’s case, however, it has been a very slow progression over several years.
Serica shares her challenging initial journey with her GP, which lacked positive progress, and her eventual visit to a dermatologist. Of course, we also discuss the impact on mental health and her process of coming to terms with and accepting her alopecia. You’ll hear an inspirational story about her teaching in secondary school and how she raises awareness of living with alopecia among the teens she teaches every year.
We also talk about her journey with Alopecia UK, finding support groups, and eventually becoming a speaker at their charity events. Serica sets a fantastic example, showing that it’s okay to be yourself however you choose — whether that’s wearing wigs, hats, or bravely embracing a shaved head — as long as it reflects your true self.
Enjoy the show!

I’m joined by Naomi Hall from the amazing charity Alopecia UK. We discuss the incredible support they provide to people with alopecia and the events they run to raise awareness — for both those with the condition and those who want to understand it better.
Naomi also shares her personal journey with hair loss, as she herself has Alopecia Areata. We even talk about the Jada and Will Smith moment at the 2022 Academy Awards and whether it helped bring alopecia into the public conversation in a positive way.
If you or someone you know is experiencing hair loss, whether diagnosed or not, this episode is full of warmth, honesty, and practical insight. You’ll hear Naomi’s story, learn about the incredible work of Alopecia UK, and gain encouragement and understanding for your own journey.

In my first episode, I talk to an amazing lady who lost all her hair quite rapidly. We chat about that journey — from how it felt, to who she could confide in, what support she had, and life wearing wigs.
We also explore the vulnerabilities, the effect on mental health, being your true self on holiday, and coping with the day-to-day back home. It’s got everything in here, so grab a cuppa and enjoy! ☕
Elaine has Lichen Planopilaris, a scarring alopecia condition. We also discuss trichologists, who help with both hair and skin disorders — just make sure whoever you choose is a member of the Institute of Trichologists.

Welcome to Talking Hair Loss with Katie Dear.
I'm Katie Dear, a Hair Loss and Wig Consultant, and this podcast is dedicated to honest conversations about the realities of hair…
Each episode features inspiring guests who share their personal experiences of hair loss caused by chemotherapy, alopecia, dermatological conditions, hormonal changes, and many other reasons. Together, we explore the emotional impact, the challenges they've faced, and what has helped them move forward.
Alongside these conversations, I interview healthcare professionals and industry experts, sharing practical advice on wigs, hair replacement, treatments, scalp health, and emotional wellbeing to help you feel informed, supported, and empowered.
My aim is simple: to break the stigma surrounding hair loss, raise awareness, and remind you that you are not alone.
