On Thursday, the Israeli military announced it had killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in an operation in southern Gaza the day prior. Sinwar was one of the primary architects of Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel and was believed to have been hiding in Gaza’s tunnel system since the attack. Despite Sinwar’s death, both sides have resisted engaging in renewed ceasefire talks.

On November 5, in addition to presidential, House, state and local elections, voters will be casting ballots in 34 Senate elections in 33 different states. Currently, a coalition of 47 Democrats and four independent senators holds a 51-49 advantage over Republicans in Congress’s upper chamber. This year, Republicans are only defending 11 of the 33 Senate seats up for election and are likely to hold all 11. Two of the 23 Democratic seats up for election — in West Virginia and Montana — are rated solid Republican and lean Republican, respectively, by Cook Political Report.

Last Wednesday, Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 storm, knocking out power to 3.2 million people and killing at least eight. Two weeks earlier, Hurricane Helene ravaged the Southeast, killing more than 250 people and resulting in widespread devastation. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which coordinates the federal response to disasters that exceed the capabilities of local and state authorities, has become the target of criticism for its response to these storms — particularly from conservative commentators — pertaining to how it allocates resources, its responsiveness, and its funding.

Today, we’re focusing on 10 ballot initiatives that we think exemplify this moment in U.S. politics. In Tangle fashion, we’ll give a neutral overview of the measure and what advocates and opponents are saying about it. However, we won’t be giving our take — the intent of this piece is to highlight a selection of ballot initiatives that tell a story about the salient issues of this election. We’ll let you decide what arguments sound the strongest to you.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Garland v. VanDerStok, a case challenging a 2022 Biden administration rule that regulated unserialized firearms, also known as “ghost guns.” A group of firearms owners, gun rights groups and manufacturers challenged the rule, arguing that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) exceeded its authority in issuing the regulation. During arguments, a majority of justices on the court seemed skeptical of the plaintiffs’ case, indicating that they would uphold the rule when they issue their decision in summer 2025.

On Saturday, the tech executive joined former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the site of the attempted assassination of Trump in July. Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and the owner of X (formerly Twitter), addressed the rally’s attendees and reaffirmed his support for Trump’s candidacy while criticizing Democrats on a range of issues. Broadly, the speech exemplified Musk’s evolution from a political moderate to an outspoken advocate for the former president.
