In their regular 6-minute segments featured at the top of the hour on the Progressive Voices Channel on Tune-In, New York-based comedian Tara Devlin and Southern comedian Sherri D. Sutton look at news and politics through an unapologetically liberal lens.

As Ben Franklin left Independence Hall at the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, a woman asked, “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”

Franklin famously replied, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”

Less than 300 years later, our Republic is being torn apart by factions that have threatened self-governance throughout history – concentrated wealth, oligarchy and the autocrats that exploit it.

In their 56th episode, Tara fills Sherri in on some of the history of the late Roman Republic that declined into authoritarianism and wonder whether historians in the future will refer to this period as “the Late American Republican.” As we endure the authoritarian fascist Trump, his willfully ignorant supporters and the establishment that props him up in order to continue concentrating wealth and power in the hands of the few, we can’t help but think about the fate of our Republic. Can we can keep it?

Topic: Republican Grifters Peddle Plutocracy

If you ever need evidence that the modern Republican Party is nothing but a gaggle of greedy grifters running a con to convince working class suckers to be the useful idiots in the demise of American democracy, just look at this 2016 presidential election cycle.

But remember, before Republicans gave us Trump, they gave us Sarah Palin – Even as she revealed herself to be just another one of their wilfully ignorant thin skinned narcissists not fit to manage a freaking White Castle, much less a modern nation, the Republican leadership continued to propel her to the national stage as the person most qualified American to be a 78-year-old's heartbeat away from the nuclear codes.

Then there was Bobby Jindal. Marco Rubio. Chris Christie. Each election cycle, we're forced to endure some "new" Republican "leader" who's supposed to convince us that subjugation to the billionaire class is what "freedom" is all about.

Now they've given us Donald Trump. And no matter how many times he gets caught in the act of being himself, namely... a racist, misogynist, malignant narcissist who, when his tiny hands aren't busy grabbing at women's private parts without permission are typing away on Twitter at 5 AM.. they'll still throw their support behind him.

Because the Republican Party's doesn't have "leaders" or new "ideas." They have an agenda to make plutocracy palatable to the low-IQ, low-effort-thinking, average Republican dupe.

But we should consider really ourselves lucky that what Trump lacks in his tiny hands, he makes up with his big mouth and now the monster Republicans created is turning on the Republican establishment, hopefully doing some real damage to the Republican sham before they succeed in destroying pesky democracy once and for all by presenting someone presentable.

Are we too stupid to have a democracy?

Republicans claim the mantle of patriotism and claim to “love” America – as they cheer for an authoritarian who requires nothing of them but their willful ignorance and unbridled unquestioning support.

For all of recorded history, world governments have mostly consisted of some form of authoritarian rule with entrenched wealth and intergenerational aristocracy.

Topic: Tax-evading billionaires aren't “Geniuses” - they're PARASITES

What do you call an entity that rapaciously sucks up resources, sickening everything around it while it bloats itself on our lifeforce? Normal people call that thing a parasite. When it comes to paying no taxes to fund the country they supposedly love, Republicans call that person a “genius”.

So, according to Republicans, I guess we’re all a bunch of idiots who understand that Taxes are, as FDR said,

“the admission price to a civilized society.”

You see, studies show that "Most Americans are OK with the amount of tax they pay.” It's what other people pay, or don't pay, that bothers them.” and they can’t stand rhe rich and their corporations paying nothing.

You see, humans may be wired for fairness. Republicans, it seems, are wired for fraud and selfishness.

So, every tax dollar the rich doesn't pay means we don't invest in our nation and our future. We have no money for bridges… no money for education… for health… for research and development... for seniors… for our soldiers.

Oh, but they want all the benefits of civiliation, but none of the responsibilities. Want to know what a real "taker" looks like - get a load of-Donald Trump.

Yes, Right wingers are like overgrown Goldilocks. The size of "Gub'mnt" is "just right" only in parts they perceive benefit them directly as they cheer the parasites who use the "mad money" they grift from us all to buy politicians, corrupt government to ensiure they can continue their free ride.

Because being a parasite & a moocher is a mark of "genius" only if one is a sociopath - or a Republican.

And not paying taxes doesn’t make someone a genius. But it sure makes the people that support them dupes.

Topic: Republicans don’t love America – they love their sick greedy party

It's an empirical fact that Republicans cannot stand when good things happen to America. When they hear good news, it’s like watching psychotics cycle through the five stages of grief.

For example, Remember when, at the beginning of the Obama Presidency, Republicans literally cheered when learning that the International Olympic Committee had eliminated Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Summer games? At the time, Media Matters reported Glenn Beck said the news was "so sweet," and Rush Limbaugh declaring himself "happy" and "gleeful".

I don’t know, but last time I looked, Chicago was part of the United States. You know, that thing represented by the [Made in China] American flag lapel pins Republicans insist everyone wear.

While Democrats work to break through the right wing wall of propaganda and win back Red states with POLICIES that will actually improve the lives of people in those states, Republicans campaign using divisive language against blue states.

How many times have we heard about Republican presidential candidates whine to their crowd of dupes about “Massachusetts liberals” or “real America”?

When Southern states get duped as usual, to vote against their own economic interests we would never hear Liberal or Democratic politicians say “well, there’s that Tennessee-style stupidity, for ya!” You might hear it from me, but Democratic politicians, for the most part, will be figuring out ways to help people despite their political leanings or location on the map.

Their behavior is clear.

But Republicans don’t really love America – they love their party. Their sick, kiss up/kick down, filthy, disgusting party.
