I am a huge EdTech fan. I love to talk about EdTech, I love to explore the possibilities of EdTech in helping to make the lives of teachers and students easier. On this episode of the Teach Middle East podcast, I speak with Al Kingsley. Al is well known in the EdTech space and in the education circles globally. He is the Managing Director of NetSupport, and he is also the chair of two multi-academy trusts.

 We talk about whether Covid-19 pandemic is a crisis or an opportunity for the education sector. We delve into what schools should and should not be doing when planning their digital strategies, we got our crystal balls out and attempted to predict the future of EdTech. Let's Talk Teacher Burnout with Neil Thomas

According to educationsupport.co.uk, 75% of teaching and education staff said they have experienced a variety of stress symptoms in the last two years; 

 Almost one in five (19%) said they had experienced panic attacks

Over half (56%) had suffered from insomnia and difficulties sleeping

Over a third (41%) had experienced difficulty concentrating

Teacher burnout is not simply the result of being overworked and underpaid. It can be the result of prolonged stress.

We speak with Neil Thomas about teacher burnout. Neil speaks from his experience as a teacher and school leader about dealing with burnout. He gives tips on how to spot it and he also offers ideas on how to handle it. Let’s dive in. 

A teacher with over 14 years of teaching and leadership experience both in the UK and internationally, He is now working as an educational consultant. Having been affected by burnout, he decided to return to the UK to find a better work-life balance and recuperate both mentally and physically.

There is no magic formula to creating an environment in which self-evaluation can flourish, but there are some underlying principles that will help you to gain some personal clarity, establish a conducive setting and keep the school moving in the right direction at the right speed. It is essential to remember that people carry out self-evaluation and this is where you must initially focus your attention if you want the processes to work. Without the people aspect, you will simply have a production line that runs at a pre-set speed and churns out the same thing time after time – this is when self-evaluation becomes a meaningless activity and is essentially a burden on any school.

 Create an inspiring vision for the school

Strategy is about the big picture and about taking a long-term view that transcends day-to-day operational issues. It is very easy to get sucked into the detail and bogged down in the minutia of daily life in the school, but you must make sure that you filter what is most important and relevant. You can only do this if you have a clear vision of what you are trying to achieve – a representation of what your strategy will actually deliver.

• Establishing a vision takes time but it is time well spent.
• Imagine what the school’s future will be like.
• The vision should be clear and simple.

Your vision should be an aspirational description of what the school will look like in the future. It should allow people to see a picture in their mind and imagine what the school will achieve and accomplish, as well as providing them with a clear direction to plan their future goals and actions. If you represent the vision purely in words, then it is left open to different interpretations of language and things will get lost in translation.

As principal, you may understand and appreciate the importance of having a clearly articulated vision, but what about your senior leaders … your middle leaders … your teachers … your governors? Think about bringing different these different stakeholders together for a session during which you collectively create a vision board that summarises and represents your school’s vision, which can then be displayed and shared across the school....

What makes your school unique and different from the school down the road? Your vision needs to answer this question and should serve as a marketing tool to convince potential parents that this is the school community that their children need to be part of. Yet, producing a vision and engaging in self-evaluation and improvement is not unique to schools, so reading about approaches outside education can help you think in a different

The concept of self-evaluation was initially introduced to schools as a means of driving the agenda for school improvement. As inspection regimes developed around the world, the accuracy and robustness of a school’s self-evaluation began to inform judgements on both the effectiveness of the school’s leadership and the school’s capacity for further improvement. This approach meant that self-evaluation became intrinsically linked to external evaluations, most typically inspection, and therefore became a necessary evil for many schools to undergo at regular intervals. The problem with this is that when viewed purely in this way, self-evaluation becomes an event that creates a bureaucratic burden and additional workload with little meaningful return for teachers and students.

Experience has shown that when school leaders change their approach to embrace and integrate self-evaluation into the day-to-day life and work of a school, they begin to see tangible value benefits for all stakeholders that go far beyond the original perception of simply judging what the school is doing well and where it needs to develop and improve. In these schools, self-evaluation is not simply an event triggered by an external stimulus but is a continuous cycle of reflection and analysis that has a very specific purpose.

We all know that schools are complex dynamic organisations that need to be able to adapt to ever-changing circumstances. In fact, the only real constant in most schools is that change will happen … student populations, parental communities, staffing profiles, curricular requirements, governance and legislative demands, to name a few. As a result, the success of a school often hinges on the ability of its leaders to filter competing demands and influences to make the right decisions and take the right actions, at the right time, in the context of their own school. This school-led approach is critical and hinges on principals having confidence and credibility in their self-evaluation process and the people that carry it out.

The Keep Soaring philosophy for self-evaluation has evolved from our work with schools over the past ten years, and in particular with schools subjected to frequent external evaluations, such as those in the UK and UAE.
