Can we stop illegal robocalls before they get into the telephone network? The FCC says “yes, and you must do so by June 30th”
The TRACED Act was put into law in late December of 2019, adding a number of enforcement tools and regulatory mandates to help stamp out the current flood of illegal robocalls. A critical element in the TRACED Act is the requirement for service providers to implement STIR/SHAKEN in their networks by June 30th, 2021. Yes, just a few months from now!
Unfortunately, many smaller and rural operators are not ready for STIR/SHAKEN and thus are looking for a deferment from the FCC while they find a solution that fits their network. In response, the FCC has mandated that operators seeking deferments must implement a solution to block illegal robocalls from originating in their networks – essentially blocking robocalls at their source.
Reading the ruling, this includes any operator that provides voice services and has access to the US telephone network. This is interpreted to include most of the ILECs, CLECs, hosted PBX, UCaaS and CPaaS operators, along with SIP Trunking providers where calls could enter the network.
To help service providers quickly meet this requirement, TelcoBridges recently announced an integration with YouMail to create an illegal robocall blocking system for service providers, powered by AI and machine learning and can be quickly integrated into both SIP and TDM networks.
This last week, Mike Rudolph, CTO at YouMail and I spent some time with Doug Green, publisher at Telecom Reseller during a podcast session to explain how the joint solution works and the impact on service provider networks. As Mike explains, YouMail’s sensor network of clients collects data from millions of telephone calls, using AI and machine learning to distill down a database of suspected spam callers. TelcoBridges’ ProSBC integration with YouMail leverages this database in real-time to examine each call, allowing redirection or termination of suspected spammer calls.
You can listen in here. We also have a joint webinar planned for March 23rd, 2021 - more information and registration is here.
Implementing a robocall mitigation solution today helps service providers buy time while they work toward their implementation of STIR/SHAKEN.
