  • Podcast: Episode 3: Modern LAN Principle #2: Build Flexible Networks That Can Evolve with Your Business
Modern LAN Podcast Series Episode #3: Build Flexible Networks That Can Evolve with Your Business

“It is important to design your network in a manner that has flexibility that not only what you are looking to do today but as your network needs evolve and change, you give in consideration today for those changes your looking to make in the future,” says John Croce CEO of NVT Phybridge. In this podcast we learn how mobility and other changes in the structure and nature of the network have an impact and how the Modern LAN holds part of the answer to these new challenges. Mobility and BYOT can also mean workers, unknowingly, hand carrying network threats right into the show. New work environments can demand scalability and flexibility.

This is episode 3 of a 7-episode podcast series in which John Croce and Doug Green will discuss the six principles of the Modern LAN; as well as why every consultant, system integrator and end-user needs to be familiar with the principles and how organizations have already leveraged them to achieve better results. Modern LAN white paper and the principles within are the result of Frost & Sullivan industry analysts recognizing an alarming trend - IoT deployments are impacting the business network in an alarming way; raising concerns around network complexity, network performance and reliability, network security, long deployment times, environmental concerns, as well as the infrastructure costs and barriers that organizations are experiencing as they attempt to support IoT deployments.

  • Podcast: As we move to 5G – what was it like for the first cellular call and 1G?
Keith Radousky, who was there, provides the background and paints a very clear picture of what was going on with communications to Don Witt of The Channel Daily News, a TR publication. The first Mobile Telephone Service (MTS) starting in 1946 in St. Louis and was simplex, meaning you could not talk and listen at the same time. The call had to be placed through an operator and only three MTS calls could be active at one time in the city of St. Louis.

While cellular concept was invented in 1947 by AT&T Bell Labs, Keith will let us know why it took so long to become a reality on Oct 13, in 1983. While I had season tickets to the Bears from 1973 to 1980, I know it had to be a cold day on Soldier Field in Chicago when the call was made to the great grandson of Alexander Gram Bell in Germany by the president of Illinois Bell, Robert Barnett.

There is more colorful information about the first call and the technology of the day:

    How much did it cost?
    Who used it?
    Where was it used?
    How do 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G track from 1G?
What were some of the 1G features?

  • Podcast: Episode 2: Modern LAN Principle #1: The Outside-In Approach
Modern LAN Podcast Series Episode #2: The Outside-in Approach

“Never let your education get in the way of your learning, says John Croce CEO of NVT Phybridge. In this podcast, Croce points out that in today’s IOT era network can be challenged by traditional network thinking. “The outside-in approach is principle number one of Modern LAN principles by Frost & Sullivan, “says John Croce CEO of NVT Phybridge. Croce explains that the conventional approach is to look at the performance of the switch without too much attention to the individual end point. The outside-in approach identifies each end-point’s unique power, latency, and bandwidth requirements. Croce discusses how a lack of end point consideration can “compromise your business”. Croce says, “Start with the IOT end-points, understand their requirements and then design your network accordingly.”

This is episode 2 of a 7-episode podcast series in which John Croce and Doug Green will discuss the six principles of the Modern LAN; as well as why every consultant, system integrator and end-user needs to be familiar with the principles and how organizations have already leveraged them to achieve better results.
