  • Ep34: Week of throwdowns over sanctuary cities, bathrooms, even the KKK. Plus, partisan tensions grow in Austin, Washington as Abbott promises to punish, and as Trump targets a Texas senator.
Call it the week of the throwdowns.
First came Gov. Greg Abbott, blasting away at Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez and the "liberal Austin city" that he blames for allowing a wrong-headed "sanctuary city" policy to take hold, a policy he wants to ban under a new law wending its way through the Legislature. He also wants to punish violators.
Then, there was Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who went off on opponents of his so-called "bathroom bill" that would allow Texans only to use the loo for the sex listed on their birth certificate. Polls and economic estimates that claim the new law would be a disaster for the Lone Star State are flat wrong, and Patrick insists he will have enough votes to pass it through the Senate this year -- even though by most accounts he has only 15 of the 19 needed.
Next up: President Trump, who suggested (perhaps jokingly) that he might ruin the career of an unnamed Texas senator, after an East Texas sheriff suggested the lawmaker was wanting to make it more difficult for lawmen in Texas to seize assets from criminal defendants until a conviction occurred in a criminal case. The senators who have bills on the subject all pointed fingers at each other as the one Trump was referring to.
And then there was U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, claiming during a Senate speech in Washington that Democrats were the party of the Ku Klux Klan, during the fight over confirming U.S. Jeff Sessions as attorney general. Democrats tried unsuccessfully to block the nomination, and at one point the Republican majority invoked a rule to cut off Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren from an old anti-Sessions letter from Coretta Scott King, the widow of civil rights icon Martin Luther King.
Hear all  about the liberal cities, the bathroom votes, the Klan and all the other throwdowns on this week's Texas Take: The Podcast -- the leading political podcast in the Lone Star State -- where you get the inside scoop about what the Legislature is up to, in simple language every Texan can understand.

  • Ep24: Donald Trump's win turns Texas eyes to Washington; Lone Star officials eye cabinet slots as policy questions surface about future
    Nov 12, 2016

With Donald Trump now America's president elect, after one of the wildest and most vicious elections in history, Texans are turning their attention to Washington to see what kind of Lone Star flavor his cabinet and policies may have.
Among the Texas officials who campaigned for Trump. former Gov. Rick Perry has hinted strongly that he'd be interested in a job with Team Trump, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has said he'd reject any offer and Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has uncharacteristically silent. So has U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, to talk that Trump might consider him for the U.S. Supreme Court -- a job  Cruz would love.
Trump won Texas by one of the slimmest margins for a Republican in two decades, Houston went for Hillary Clinton -- and so did Fort Bend County, a reliably GOP bastion in the past. We look at what's up with that.
Texas politics are never boring, and these intriguing highlights and other behind-the-scenes insights are explored in this week's Texas Take: The Podcast -- the leading political podcast in the Lone Star State, in a season when the furor over the just-ended presidential election will soon transition into speculation about the legislative session that begins in January.

  • Gov. Abbott Changes the Rules in the Middle of the Election

With some ballots already out and early voting starting soon, Gov. Greg Abbott this week infuriated voting rights advocates by ordering new restrictions on how ballots can be delivered by hand. Plus, Texas Senators Cornyn and Cruz weigh in on the first presidential debate and Texas Ag Commissioner Sid Miller gets "Boratted." Yeah, we'll explain.

  • These Aren't Your Garden Variety Democrats

Faced with mounting criticism over the state's coronavirus response and Democratic arguments that the GOP wants to eliminate protections for people with preexisting conditions, Republicans in Texas are attacking the minority party as "the radical left" who want to "destroy entire cities." Meantime, the Texas GOP is in all out civil war over the way you're allowed to vote early in this election.

  • Picking Winners and Losers in the Pandemic

After more than 45 days without a real update, Gov. Greg Abbott this week announced a new round of lifting restrictions related to the coronavirus. • If You're Losing the Argument, Change the Subject Fast

With coronavirus deaths in Texas now topping 14,000, Gov. Greg Abbott, Sen. John Cornyn, and Republicans up and down the ballot would rather talk about anything else. Cornyn is tap dancing around new revelations about what President Trump knew about the virus earlier in the year and Gov. Abbott is doubling down on defending rather than "defunding" the police.

  • The fight over mail ballots comes to a head in Texas

Just as Republicans universally attack the Democratic Harris County Clerk for his planned mailing of mail ballot applications, the Republican Party of Texas is sending mail ballot request forms to voters across the state. What's up with that? Plus, the rebel Dallas salon owner who defied Gov. Greg Abbott's coronavirus orders is in the spotlight as a candidate for Texas Senate.

  • A Texan at the RNC Never Mentions President Trump's Name

Among the speakers at this week's RNC was Houston Rep Dan Crenshaw, who unlike just about every other speaker at the GOP's convention never uttered the name of the Republican President. Plus Gov. Abbott brushes off criticism from prominent members of his own party who have taken him to task over his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Following the model set by the Texas Democratic Party, the DNC this week kicked off its historic first-ever virtual convention. Real Texans, not necessarily Texas politicians, took center stage for much of it. Plus Gov. Greg Abbott threatened cities with loss of tax revenue if they "defund police."

  • Texans Snubbed at the Democratic National Convention

The Chairman of the Texas Democratic Party says the organizers of the DNC "messed up" by not scheduling any members of the party from this state to speak. And after she was chosen as Joe Biden's running mate, California Sen. Kamala Harris follows Texas Sen. Ted Cruz as the latest target of President Donald Trump's "birtherism."
