  • EP 113: Across the Pond with Postcard Academy
Sarah Mikutel is originally from the east coast, but she currently lives and works in the U.K. As the creator of Postcard Academy, a blog and travel podcast, Sarah shares stories of people who packed up everything to start a new adventure in another part of the world.
It may seem a bit flighty at first, but there’s a meaningful design to Sarah’s travel musings, and for someone with the world, literally, at her fingertips, we’re going to find out why Sarah comes to Newport each year, and how our ‘city by the sea’ compares to some of the world’s most beautiful places. Listen in!

Our guest is Mike Slein, president of the Museum of Newport Irish History. Buck and Helena chat with Mike about how the Irish built and shaped our ‘city by the sea’. Listen in!

  • EP 111: Trent Theroux Swims Around Aquidneck Island
One day you’re kayaking in Naragansett Bay, and the next, you’re in a hospital, paralyzed and unable to feel your legs. This is the story of today’s guest, Trent Theroux. It’s a fascinating and inspiring story that Trent describes as his awkward journey to the Ironman”. Suffice it to say that our guest did not languish in his hospital bed for long, and instead turned tragedy into a testament of motivation, strategy, and determination. Listen in!

  • EP 110: Parlor, NIMRI, and Podcasting
Newport is a small community with a large reach. People and businesses settle here because of the city’s charm, coastal location, and sophistication – without the congestion of big city life. This means we have a lot of top-notch local talent.
Helena recently spent an evening at Parlor on Broadway, talking to a group of professionals who were interested in podcasting. She was surprised by a number of things at this gig – things that came right up against her attitudes about Newport, networking, and even herself. Listen in for a new Dine & Dish, to find out about podcasting, and what went down before, during, and after the event hosted by Newport Interactive Marketing!

  • EP 109: No Gas Newport
We yankees may have a reputation for being standoffish and hard to reach, but once you break the ice, we’re friends for life. This has become painfully clear this past week in Newport, where friends and neighbors in the city by the sea are struggling with no heat because our natural gas provider, National Grid, experienced an equipment failure that left almost 7,000 homes and businesses without heat. Instead of bringing Newport to a grinding halt, the challenge brought out the best in Rhode Islanders. In this episode, we offer a neighbor’s view of the National Grid No Gas Debacle. Listen in!

Newport to Kick Off the Holiday Season at the Annual Holiday Harbor Lights Illuminated Boat Parade
Newport (R.I.) November 14, 2018— Sail into the most wonderful time of the year at the 21st Annual Newport Harbor Illuminated Boat Parade on Friday, November 23rd, 2018 at 6:15 p.m. Spectators can view this highly anticipated dazzling display of nautical holiday spirit along Newport Harbor’s waterfront from the Newport Yacht Club (open to the public for the event), Perrotti Park, Bowen’s Wharf, Bannister’s Wharf, and points around Newport Harbor.
Viewing of the parade is free of charge, making this a great family event to get into the spirit of the holiday season.  At 6 p.m., parade boats will rendezvous just south of the Goat Island Causeway and then proceed east leaving Newport Yacht Club. Boats will then travel south along the downtown waterfront and then return to the Goat Island Causeway area.
“This year we are excited to have Dick Cromwell, owner of Maritime Solutions Inc. and Freedom Boat Club of RI, as our Parade Marshall”, states Harbormaster Tim Mills. Each year Dick rallies the crew to enter 2-3 festively decorated boats in the parade.  “The parade will feature a variety of water craft that call Narragansett Bay home including leisure boats of all sizes, commercial fishing boats, tug boats, and Coast Guard and Navy vessels,” adds Mills
Magnificently decorated vessels will compete for prizes in the following categories: Best Decorated Sailboat (commercial and recreational), and Best Decorated Powerboat (commercial and recreational), Best Decorated Fishing Boat, Best Decorated Porch or Docks, and finally, arguably the parade’s most entertaining category, Most Team Spirit.
Parade organizers encourage all Newport Harbor waterfront owners to decorate porches and docks for the event through the holiday season. An award will be presented to the most dazzling landlubbing display as observed by the Harbormaster from the water that evening.
To contribute to the community this holiday season, participants and spectators are asked to bring a non- perishable food item to donate to the Martin Luther King Jr. Center.  There will be a donation box set up inside the Newport Yacht Club.
Any organization, business, or boat owner that would like to get involved in the 21st Annual Holiday Harbor Lights Illuminated Boat Parade should contact Newport Harbormaster Tim Mills at (401) 845-5815. Participants are asked to register by 12:00pm on November 23rd.

In this BONUS episode, Helena chats with Little Compton Town Council candidate, Jeremy Allen, about why he is running for a spot on the Town Council. Who is he? Why is he running, and how does he fit in with the Little Compton Democratic Town Committee.
It’s a casual, personal, and genuine conversation. No rhetoric. Perhaps this is what the next generation of politicians can be like – open, honest, devoted. An incredibly special small town way of life is at stake here. What can folks like Jeremy do to preserve it? Listen in!
