  • EP 94: Jerks, Happiness, and Beautiful Skin
Newport Rhode Island is exciting and fun because the people who live here make it that way. We put our hearts and souls into making magic, and in this episode, we meet another interesting resident who contributes to it all with her commitment to her kids, her own personal joy, and her thriving business. Plus, as we Work to #discoverhappiness, the discussion about self-observation continues with some humbling revelations from your hosts.

Hear her story in this segment, which includes a few beauty tips for healthy summer skin.
Discovering Happiness Continues 20:20 – End
The truth is sometimes painful, but observing it within us is the first step to healing and happiness, because in accepting the truth about ourselves, we experience real freedom. Helena and Buck share some painful and interesting observations they have made about themselves. Humility is often the byproduct of self-observation. It is also strangely liberating. Listen in!

  • EP 92: Back to Broadway with Don Gardner
Don Gardner works on Broadway and he loves it! Don returns to the show this week to tell us what’s new on Broadway, why the locals go there, and who makes a killer espresso martini. Plus, Helena dives into more Work, as she discusses how observing the many “I”s within us is another step toward real happiness.
    Freebie of the Week, :40 – 4:10
Purgatory Chasm is a stunning and easy place to visit while in town. The rock formation was created thousands of years ago by glaciers. The chasm is the result of weathering and from the effects of the sea.  Today the chasm is about 10’ wide at the top, 120’ long, and over 50’ deep. Upon arriving at the park’s entrance, you’ll take a short walk to the chasm area. Once you’re there, you can enjoy the beautiful view from the cliff overlooking Second Beach, the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge and Sachuest Bay, or walk to the small pedestrian bridge, allowing you a view straight down into the center of the chasm.
Don Gardner Says “Go Where the Locals Go”, 4:10 – 21:40
Don Gardener joins us once again to share updates on what’s happening in this other hub of Newport. While there are no water views from Broadway, there are (in our opinion) some of the absolute BEST restaurants and bars in town. If you want to feel comfortable and at home, Broadway is where the locals go.
More on the Work of Discovering Happiness, 21:40-end
At the tail end of this episode, Helena dives in to the Work. She picks up where we left of in Episode 90 and talks about self-observation and the many “I”s that live inside of us. Self-knowledge is the first step toward clearing the obstacles in our way to happiness. Are you in? Hit the PLAY button and find out!

  • EP 90: Discovering Happiness Starts with Looking Inward
The warm, happy days of summer are a great time to slow down, reflect, and think about what makes you happy. Is it the beach? How about boats, traveling, or little bitty kittehs? What if we told you that happiness isn’t something that comes with visiting your happy place and then disappears when you go back to reality? The truth is, happiness isn’t something that we have to constantly chase. In fact, it is often very close by, just buried under layers of, well, under layers of Us.
    The Journey to Happiness
To begin the journey toward long-lasting happiness, we must first have some basic self-knowledge. Understanding ourselves involves a process that opens up a ton of doors (some good, some bad) to happy things, therefore, in this episode, we introduce you to Harry Benjamin’s classic book: Basic Self-Knowledge. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but stick with us. In time, you will come to see how ridiculously effective this stuff can be for balancing out your crazy life and delivering big doses of glee to your doorstep. At the very least, it makes for good entertainment while chilling at the beach. Listen in!

  • EP 89: Newport Shipyard and the Charter Yacht Show 2018

What’s going on at Newport Shipyard this summer? Veronica Brown, the Shipyard’s marketing manager is great at articulating exactly what makes NSY such a key player in the Newport boating community.
One of the Shipyard’s big events of the year is the Newport Charter Yacht Show. This is an event where yacht owners and brokers showcase luxury vessels that are available for both short- and long-term charters. This will be our third year covering the show, and it is a favorite for a number of reasons, not the least of which is how deep the layers of service and hospitality go in this industry.
Listen in to find out how this harbor-front hub can be a part of your travel plans this year.
Plus, the Newport Bermuda Race starts Friday (June 15, 2018). Watching the race start is free!
The race starts close to land, and there are a lot of shoreside spots available to the public so you can enjoy the excitement. The northern end of Fort Adams State Park is great for watching the boats (171 of them!) depart Newport Harbor. Other great spots for spectating are the west side of Fort Adams and Brenton Point State Park, or Fort Wetherill and Beavertail State Park in Jamestown.
“The starting line itself will be located between a yellow buoy near Castle Hill Light and a staff displaying a flag aboard Whitehawk which will be anchored near mid‐channel.”
Keep in mind that Castle Hill does charge for parking, but it’s a pretty spectacular place to watch this whole shindig go down. According to the official race website, if the weather cooperates, the race start will last about two hours.

  • EP 88: The Hairy Beasts of Swiss Village Farm

A 45-acre farm in Newport plays host and matchmaker to some beautiful and important creatures. Many people don’t think about Newport’s agricultural assets, but with a unique microclimate right on the Atlantic coast, raising rare livestock in the name of preserving biodiversity, is actually a very Newport thing to do!
Sarah Bowley, Program Director at SVF Foundation, is with us in this episode, talking about rare, heritage livestock they raise at SVF, and why the research they do there is so important.
Biodiversity is an important word if you’re at all concerned with the environment, human health, and the evolution of the species – including our own. SVF Foundation works in partnership with Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine to preserve critical genetic material through a process called cryopreservation. In fact, SVF is the first organization to successfully birth a rare-breed embryo; a Tennessee fainting goat named Chocolate Chip. On a less heady note, this stuff is really important for locavores, which are people whose whose diets consists only, or mostly, of locally grown or produced food.
Your hosts are not fans of factory-farmed food. At all. In fact, we believe that there needs to be a major paradigm shift in food production in our country. Moving away from massive meat and produce operations to smaller, local farms is healthier for both the livestock and the people who consume them. It’s especially important to provide a humane and natural life for the animals who will eventually help sustain ours. You will really enjoy our conversation with Sarah about it all.
Plus, we introduce a new segment in this episode that we hope to make a regular part of our show. “Newport Freebies” introduces interesting and FREE things to do in Newport, as well as throughout Newport county, including: Middletown, Portsmouth, Tiverton, and Little Compton.
