  • Cruel Summer – Episode 10 – Hostile Witness

Cruel Summer has led us down some crazy rabbit holes and leapt over some giant plot holes, but it is finally over. Kate and Jeanette face off in court and in Martin’s house that’s still furnished two years later for some reason. A lot of loose ends are wrapped up in convenient and not at all unbelievable ways. The 12 year old girl and her cat who wrote this show should be proud.

  • Cruel Summer – Episode 9 – A Secret of My Own

This episode is filled with so much cringe that we recommend consulting a chiropractor before watching because your shoulders will be up to your ears. We learn that Greg Turner is a walk and talker, Jeanette is a very polite trespasser, and Jamie’s pager has an answering machine? Apparently Martin’s house is located on the main thoroughfare in town, and we wonder if he moonlights at Bed, Bath, and Beyond because he certainly has a lot of heavy curtains and rods on hand. We find out more about Kate’s time with Martin and discover how she ended up in the basement, and it’s not because he kept making her try food she doesn’t like. Come cringe with us?

  • Cruel Summer – Episode 8 – Proof

It’s the first day of school at Skylin High, which doesn’t mean much because no one actually goes to class. In 1993, Mallory has big plans to unveil her prank video but Jeanette has been to mall jail and is not here for silly pranks. She’s a real rebel now. Vince and Ben go off to the bleachers to flirt about the fact that they both have dead moms. Seriously. This happens. And Kelly lets us in on a secret so dorky that it cannot be measured. It’s peak level nerd and you do not want to miss it.

  • Cruel Summer – Episode 7 – Happy Birthday, Kate Wallis

Kate was not about to let Jeanette take her sloppy seconds again. She is about to have the worst birthday three years in a row! Take that, Jeanette! Our girl is having her 15th birthday Texas-style with a trip to the mall food court to sip on some booze from a bedazzled flask. Kate decides all she wants for her birthday this year is to spill the tea while Jamie spills the booze. We dive into that random family donation basket that for some reason is kept in Kate’s room. And we finally get the story on how Kate and Mallory became friends. Spoiler alert: it involves pot.

  • Cruel Summer – Episode 6 – An Ocean in Me

1993 Jeanette is still in her “I want to be bad” phase, which leads to her being thrown in mall jail and a closet. Cindy Turner shows off her impressive cut key knowledge and Tennille’s mom is here for some reason. This one is boring, like recording your family playing a card game boring. Wtf is Nerts anyway? But don’t worry, we find the laughs. You’re welcome.

  • Cruel Summer – Episode 5 – As the Carny Gods Intended

It’s time for the county fair! Jeanette and Kate are super excited to show off their 4-H projects. Just kidding. They’re actually both really excited to stalk people and have PTSD flashbacks in the funhouse. In 1993, Jeanette is having her first date at the fair and feeling dope while Kate is walking into a grooming trap and Jamie is jonesing for some dunk tank action. We witness Greg and Angela’s meet cute and finish out with some karaoke. Heeeey, What’s going on? No seriously. What is happening?

  • Cruel Summer – Episode 4 – You Don’t Hunt, You Don’t Eat

The Wallis family is taking a hunting trip…for three years. Also, surprise! Kate has a stepsister (?!), a new BFF (sorry, Captain and Tennille), and possibly another personality. We get a bit more Martin/basement footage, and we’re all wondering who sent that threatening letter (four letters) and where they buy their printer paper.

  • Cruel Summer – Episode 3 – Off with a Bang

This episode is called Off with a Bang, but it’s really more of a whimper. Nothing much happens other than our desire to buy the Turner Family cable so they can watch something other than the news. We learn that 1993 Jeanette is getting addicted to being “bad.” Like not brushing her teeth before bed kind of bad. Scandalous! 1994 Kate has super weird taste in movies. Seriously, who enjoys Groundhog’s Day? 1995 Jeanette, like all of us, is bingeing Law and Order. We do get some background on Vincent, like how he always seems to be taking out the trash, and we don’t mean taking Jeanette to the Whataburger.

  • Cruel Summer – Episode 2 – A Smashing Good Time

This week we get Kate’s version of events of what happened in 1993-95. She starts out with the perfect life with the perfect family and the not so perfect Texas accent. It comes and goes, y’all. From 94-95, Kate starts liking the Cranberries and it all goes downhill from there. If she and Jeanette could work it out they actually have a lot in common, with their alternative, goth phase. Come for the weird ear piercing scene, but stay for the very specific internet chat rooms. We can’t wait to see what happens next.

  • Cruel Summer – Episode 1 – Happy Birthday, Jeanette Turner

We are taking it way back to the 90’s with this one. Poor Jeanette Turner is having a rough time. Her hair is kinky, she has braces AND glasses! Oh the humanity! Then somehow we flash forward a year and things are great. Her braces and glasses have literally disappeared along with the wave in her hair. How? Just how? We may never find out because we rush ahead another year and suddenly she’s rocking the emo look. What is happening???? We have no idea but it’s a lot of fun. Come listen to us relive our awkward high school years as we discuss “Cruel Summer”.
