What strange creatures inhabit the so-called “particle zoo”? Why is it a zoo instead of something simpler? Is there anything that connects the forces and particles of our universe? I discuss these questions and more in today’s Ask a Spaceman!

Just like all good stories, the life of a star has a beginning, a middle and an end.
The most massive stars end their tales in a most dramatic fashion. They light up the sky in an explosion that's bright enough to outshine an entire galaxy and violent enough to send the star’s guts flying out into space like so much cosmic flotsam & jetsam.
A supernova!
Supernova iPTF14hls is the supernova under consideration in today's podcast.

It was a busy week, so in this episode we interview the guy behind the Urban Astronomer Podcast. Errata: At one point, while discussing ancient historical astronomers, Allen says that he wrote an article on Aristarchus who was the first person to have measured the diameter of the Earth. He was actually thinking of Eratosthenes. Also, a stadia is closer to 170 meters in length!
Brief bio of the podcaster: Allen is an amateur astronomer, an IT professional, a podcaster, a father of five beautiful kids and a barely competent chess player. He is also the director of the Astrophotography Section of the Astronomical Society of South Africa, where he coordinates and promotes the activities of people who are far better photographers than him.
