Emilio is the lead author of two recent SETI Research Center publications about Ross 128 b, the nearby exoplanet that researchers feel may have conditions that are conducive to life.

His expertise is in modelling of physical processes in galaxies, such as gas accretion onto galaxies, star formation, stellar feedback, gas accretion onto black holes, among other similar mechanisms. He also works with large multi-wavelength surveys of galaxies to study the connection between galaxies and their central super-massive black holes.

    Regular Guests:

    Dr. Morgan "Sniffles" Rehnberg ( http://cosmicchatter.org/ & @MorganRehnberg )

    This week's stories:

    - Breakthrough Listen will be scanning 'Omuamua.

  • Awesome Astronomy - December Edition

Paul Hill, Ralph Wilkins and Jenifer Millard host. Damien Phillips and John Wildridge produce.

The Discussion: Jeni gets her name in lights – well, bold print as she contributes (what else but graphs) to a published research paper and Ralph takes a look at Ben Cacase’s very own new asterism in the heart of Auriga and reads a defiant message from Michelle of ‘ze resistonce’.

The News: It’s a very rocky month as we round up the following space and astronomy news stories:

Earth’s moon had an atmosphere thicker than Mars’ for more than 70 million years

Observations suggest Proxima Centauri has a Kuiper Belt and maybe a Oort Cloud

A sci-fi like asteroid from another star system is now passing through the inner solar system

Hat of Woo / Astronomy Concept Mash-up: This month Paul’s festering Hat of Woo is a little less fetid as we discuss a plausible but untested concept that has just a faint whiff of woo about it. This month we look at The Nemesis ‘Theory’ which suggests the sun has a brown dwarf companion which causes periodic extinction events – and, of course, we’re long overdue an extinction and NASA are covering it all up!!!

Q&A: Listeners’ questions via email, Facebook & Twitter take us on a journey into the astronomy issues that have always plagued our understanding or stretched our credulity. This month we’re tackling a question about meteor showers and how we calculate their orbits:

I was wondering if all known meteor showers are definitely associated with a comet? Also, how do astronomers determine the orbit of a comet using just a few locations on the sky?

Ben Cacase, Manhattan, New York via email.

  • Urban Astronomer - Ep. 13: The Planets, ICON 2017 & Mars!

This week we turn our steely gaze upon the red planet Mars, but we haven't forgotten our promise to share some highlights from our time at the ICON Comics and Games Convention.  We even indulge in a little hoax busting, picking a fight with an old scam that just won't die.The first segment is the next in Cathrine's series on The Planets.  In these recordings, she talks first about the mythology behind the names of the planets, and then discusses the actual worlds themselves.  Mars, as it turns out, was a little more complex than our usual "God of War" image.  And when we look at the science, it turns out to be a spectacularly badly named planet.

Then we cut to our time at ICON 2017.  As previously mentioned, we ran a stand on behalf of the ScopeX telescope and astronomy expo, to promote it and get people to come visit in September.  While there, we got to chat to a lot of people, who had quite a varied range if interests.  A few of them consented to let me record our conversations, and I've tried to stretch my editing muscles a bit in the way I presented them.  I'm reasonably happy with how it came out, and hopefully you'll like it too.  If you'd like to see the photos referenced, they're part of Dawie Venter's gallery on the ASSA website.

We then return to Mars, addressing a 14-year-old (at time of recording) hoax email that says that Mars will be passing extra close to Earth, and will appear as large as the full Moon.  It's nonsense, of course, and I first wrote about it years ago.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo9TuRjraOQ

    Streamed live Dec 8, 2017.
We've always been fans of science fiction, but we really like our science. Today we'll talk about some books we've been reading recently that do a good job of dealing with the science in science fiction.

  • Travelers in the Night - Eps. 347 & 348: Your Space Rock & 16 NEOs

Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006.

    Today's 2 topics:

    - Meteorite hunting can be a fun pastime! It's easy, though, to get fooled by a "meteorwrong", so you might need help identifying the real thing.

    - Dr. Grauer found 16 NEO candidates in 9 hours (!) with the 60" Mt. Lemmon telescope. One of them is 2017 FU90, 100' diameter, and a possible space-mining target.
