Hosted by Mike Simmons. Mike talks at length with famed comet hunter David Levy about what makes astronomy a great hobby and why we astronomers do what we do. Spoiler alert: there is some poetry involved…

Welcome to the 7th episode of the Urban Astronomer Podcast! This episode was dropped in the middle of the Easter weekend, so in deference to the season we've got a brief segment based on one of Urban Astronomer's religiously themed articles: How is astronomy used to calculate the dates of religious festivals? And our feature item is another interview! This time around, I managed to get a hold of Neil Viljoen, who owns Telescope Shop, one of the few dedicated telescope and astronomy suppliers in Southern Africa. We met under the pretext of having him troubleshoot my primary telescope, and he very kindly agreed to let me record an interview with him in his workshop.

Our Milky Way is a complex and majestic barred spiral galaxy. But 13.7 billion years ago it began, like all galaxies, from the elementary particles formed in the Big Bang. How did our galaxy grow from nothing to the hundreds of billions of stars we see today?

Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006.
Today's 2 topics:
- Jupiter's moon Europa has water geysers on its South pole and a 60 mile deep ocean that is in contact with it's warm, rocky core. This makes it a prime place to search for extraterrestrial life.
- China has built a huge radio telescope called FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope) that is in a mountain bowl like the Arecibo dish in Puerto Rico.

How do we know Milky Way's shape and take a picture of it from outside?
Hmm… that’s an interesting question.
We live on Earth, and Earth is a planet in the Solar System. It is circling the Sun, and our beloved Sun also goes around the center of this galaxy named the Milky Way. This means we are inside the Milky Way. So.. how do we know the shape of our galaxy?

Host: Fraser Cain ( @fcain )
Special Guest: Dr. Natalie Batalha ( @nbatalha ) is an astrophysicist at NASA Ames Research Center and project scientist for NASA's Kepler Mission. Dr. Batalha leads the effort to understand planet populations in the galaxy based on Kepler's discoveries, and in 2015 she joined the leadership team of NASA's Nexus for Exoplanet System Science Coalition (NExSS,) a multidisciplinary team dedicated to searching for evidence of life beyond the Solar System as well as understanding the diversity of exoplanetary worlds and which of these worlds are most likely to harbor life.
Regular Guests:
Dr. Paul Matt Sutter ( http://www.pmsutter.com/ & @PaulMattSutter )
This week's stories:
- Is the Milky Way in a cosmic void? (NO! says Paul)
- Spotting a hidden black hole.
- The hottest planet ever.
- Weighing a white dwarf.

Our Galaxy, the Milky Way, is surrounded by 152 groups of stars, which are called globular clusters. There may be as many as 200 of them in total. They're called globular because the cluster looks like a spherical globe of stars.
They appear to be the oldest things in the galaxy, the first thing to form, and hold valuable clues about how the first stars and galaxies formed.

While we grope around in the dark, we answer a couple questions:
Dear Cheap Astronomy – Is dark energy anti-gravity, and if so could we ever harness it to build antigravity machines? Well, no and no, but as we like to say at Cheap Astronomy, let’s get there the long way round.
Dear Cheap Astronomy – Is the Universe really a black hole? Well, probably not, but as with many ideas involving black holes, it’s difficult to establish any evidence to either support or refute this.
