When stars die, the materials the star has been fusing for millions of years, all the way up to iron, are melted back down into sub-atomic particles. Then they are remade in a process called explosive nucleosynthesis. More than remade, the elements higher than iron, up to uranium are assembled in a flash.

Paul Hill & Ralph Wilkins take a back seat today and Jenifer Millard, all by her lonesome, hosts. Damien Phillips and John Wildridge produce.
Interview: On the discovery of only humanity’s third black hole merger by the incredible Laser Interferometry Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO), Jeni’s speaks with Professor Patrick Sutton, Head of Cardiff University’s Gravitational Physics Group and member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration who develops new strategies to detect gravitational wave bursts and creates techniques for locating these sources on the sky for modeling and simulations.
In this interview Jeni asks Patrick about:
Also, The Announcement: For a physics deep dive into the analysis, the data and the modeling of the new black hole merger detected by LIGO this month, LIGO Governing Council member Professor Sathyaprakash (Sathya to his friends) delivers the first lecture on this discovery.
Return to the Interview: In this segment we return to Professor Patrick Sutton who tells Jen about:

Welcome to the 6th episode of the Urban Astronomer Podcast. This is the second part of our interview with Chris Stewart, one of the names behind the Amateur Telescope Making class in Johannesburg, one of the organizers of the annual ScopeX telescope and astronomy expo, and director of the Astronomical Society of South Africa's Instrumentation section.
In this part, he talks about the pros and cons of different telescope designs, how to make them, how to select an eyepiece, and also offers solid advice for those who'd rather just buy a telescope.

We have had a chance to do a bunch of pretty fun adventures. Honestly, I think the best is yet to come. We've got the eclipse trip coming up this year. I (Fraser) am doing a trip to Iceland with Dr. Paul Matt Sutter, and there's a really great response to that. Hopefully we can go out and do more of that kind of thing out in the world.

- Human migrations in the distant past were helped by land bridges and corridors of plant life which were produced by small cyclic changes in the tilt of Earth's axis of rotation.
