In September 2016 scientists used a supercomputer to solve a two-year old mystery: The Mystery of the Monster Pulsar. Back in 2014, the NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array) X-ray space telescope detected some unexpected ‘blinking’ signals coming from what we believed was a feeding black hole.

What is a supermassive star? How many are there in our galaxy? Can they trace the stellar formation process? I have a conversation with Eleonora Zari who is working on her PhD in Leiden University trying to use the upcoming Gaia data to solve the problem of supermassive star associations in the orion constellation to understand the history of star formation in the Milky Way galaxy.
