  • Hangout-a-Thon 2015 - Katie Mack - Dark Matter, Big Bang, LHC & Stuff :^)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX9-OBFdpgE

Our guest for this segment is theoretical astrophysicist Dr. Katie Mack, ( @AstroKatie / http://www.astrokatie.com/ ). Now this doesn't mean that she's theoretically an astrophysicist. No. She's an astrophysicist who works with theories about astrophysics. She studies dark matter, black holes, cosmic strings and the formation of the first stars & galaxies. Tonight she talks with Pamela about dark matter and how outreach can be a literal gold mine for science!

  • UNAWE - Secrets of an Alien World

    http://www.unawe.org/kids/unawe1247/

On January 14, 2005, the Huygens probe dove through the foggy skies of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. It became the first and only probe to land on a world so far from Earth, which isn’t surprising considering it took over 7 years to get there! Now, it is 11 years since that event, and scientists are still exploring this alien world using Huygens’ information as their eyes. It took 10 seconds from first impact until the probe bounced, slid and wobbled to a complete stop.

  • Weekly Space Hangout - Mar 18 - Song of the Stars

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PK-qFi79TQ

Streamed live on Mar 18, 2016

    Host: Fraser Cain (@fcain)
    Special Guest: Paul M. Sutter (pmsutter.com / @PaulMattSutter)
Paul, one of our WSH regular panelists, will be talking about Song of the Stars, a project he is leading that brings astronomy to life using modern dance. http://www.songofthestars.org/
    Guests:
    Dave Dickinson (www.astroguyz.com / @astroguyz)
    Kimberly Cartier (@AstroKimCartier )
    Their stories this week:
    - The Launch of ExoMars

    - Solving the mystery of the disappearing quasar

    - Hubble discovers the most distant galaxy

    - Comet P252 LINEAR Brightens and the pass of BA14 PanSTARRS
    - Fast Radio Burst afterglow most likely an AGN
We’ve had an abundance of news stories for the past few months, and not enough time to get to them all. So we’ve started a new system. Instead of adding all of the stories to the spreadsheet each week, we are now using a tool called Trello to submit and vote on stories we would like to see covered each week, and then Fraser will be selecting the stories from there. Here is the link to the Trello WSH page (http://bit.ly/WSHVote), which you can see without logging in. If you’d like to vote, just create a login and help us decide what to cover!
We record the Weekly Space Hangout every Friday at 12:00 pm Pacific / 3:00 pm Eastern. You can watch us live on Google+, Universe Today, or the Universe Today YouTube page.
You can also join in the discussion between episodes over at our Weekly Space Hangout Crew group in G+!

  • TelescopeMan - FAQ

We try to answer the most frequently asked beginner questions!

    - Everything is upside-down when I look through my telescope! Whaaa?

    - I just bought an XYZ telescope, 60mm, the box said 575x and I can't see anything through the telescope!

    - I bought my telescope and there's no manual with it!

    - I've used my telescope 4 times and the tripod broke! (Or a knob fell off, etc.) I need parts!

    - My "equatorial" mount moves in mysterious ways!

    - How far can you see with my scope?

    - I had the Moon in the finder scope but it's not in the main eyepiece!

Hopefully I've you answer some of those questions if you were wondering about them!

As research funds become globally more and more limited, it is becoming necessary for even some of the best minds to find ways to accomplish research with little or no budget. While this may sound difficult or even impossible, the power of the Internet and the desire of everyday people to enable science are both working in your favor. From asking amateur astronomers to take data for you, to asking citizen scientists to help annotate images, to even crowdsourcing funding for new projects, your next science question may be answerable with help for the public.

This talk will overview the history of how professional astronomers have worked with the public, discuss successes in both discovery and fundraising, and introduce ways you can create your own opportunities. As part of these discussions, the accuracy of both observations and image annotations made during professional-citizen collaborations will be reviewed.

Specific focus will be given to the CosmoQuest, a virtual research facility that invites new collaborations. This online science facility is designed to allow the public to learn and do science.  CosmoQuest currently hosts three science projects that enable annotation of still images, and its underlying software supports annotation of images, image sets, and even videos. In addition to supporting science, CosmoQuest also allows the teaching of online classes through its CosmoAcademy program, and hosts online seminars that where you can showcase your work to the world, no matter where you may do that work.

Through collaborations with the public, we can work together to keep new science discoveries coming even in these times of limited resources.
The universe is ours to discover.
