Dr. Paul Matt Sutter hosts.
This week I chat with Kai Staats of the Department of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics of the University of Cape Town about going to Mars, science filmmaking, and…streaking. On Mars.
Through his research he is gaining a deeper understanding of how we, as a species, are using machine learning, data mining, and robotics to better understand the world around us, and ourselves.
Special thanks to the Square Kilometer Array South Africa for hosting this recording session.

Pamela is at a conference, so we're going to record later today than usual!
One of the biggest, most basic questions you can ask is: “why is there something and not nothing?” The reality is that we don’t know the answer, we might never know the answer. Let's probe to the edge of what we can explain, and what ideas cosmologists have proposed to explain how we all got here.

The International Space Station (called the ISS) can host up to ten people at the same time. There are currently six people living and working on this orbiting laboratory. One of those lucky six, a flight engineer, is Major Tim Peake, the first Briton in space in over 20 years! There have been 7 British citizens in space so far.

As light from the Sun travels through the atmosphere, most colors of the light are able to reach the surface without a problem. However, blue light from the Sun has a shorter wavelength and as a result is just the right size to knock into the tiny dust particles in the air and bounce off them in all directions, making the sky look blue. We call this Rayleigh scattering.
