Last week we talked about the fundamental particles that make up all matter - quarks, and Pamela broke Fraser's brain. This week we’re going to talk about baryons, the particles made up of quarks and Pamela continues breaking Fraser's brain. The most famous ones are the proton and the neutron, but that’s just the tip of the baryonic iceberg.

The holidays should be merry and bright for astronomers! The morning sky provides us with Jupiter, Mars, and Venus visible with a comet nearby and the Moon riding by early in the month. Additionally, the Geminid Meteor Shower will be extra showery this year, Venus will be occulted by the Moon, and the longest night of the year all occur this December.

Summary of content: What to look out, and up, for in December.
For the beginners this month we take a look at the constellation of Gemini with bright star Castor providing a nice easy double star to split with a telescope. We move over to the feet of the Gemini twins to scan for some nice open clusters, including Messier 35, before hunting down the beautiful Eskimo planetary nebula. Finally, we go looking for a star known to have a planet of its own.
Next we round up the planets that are visible in December: Jupiter, Venus & Mars are still around for observers after midnight and we have the possibility of a naked eye visible comet in the early hours of the morning in early December as C2013 US10 Catalina raises northern hemisphere hopes.

We have the Geminid meteor shower peaking on the night of the 12/14th December – which always puts on a great show and then we take you on a tour of the often overlooked deep sky objects in our winter skies around the constellations of Orion, Lepus and Eridanus.

Physicists are getting a handle on the structure of the Universe, how everything is made of something else. Molecules are made of atoms, atoms are made of protons, neutrons and electrons, etc. Even smaller than that are the quarks and the leptons, which seem to be the basic building blocks of all matter.

In many parts of the world, we’re heaving a big sigh of relief as the scariest part of the year comes to an end. That's Halloween in case you didn't know. But the Universe has got one last fright left in store for us – a real-life zombie star!
