Is it harder to quit drinking or keep drinking? The honest math on both columns.

You have already priced out what quitting would cost you. The Friday nights, the explanations, the evenings with nothing in your hand. What nobody prices is the other column: the arithmetic running all day, the planning, the recovery hours, the low-grade "less than good" you stopped calling a hangover because it never fully lifts.

That comparison is rigged. You are weighing a cycle you know intimately against a life you have never lived. Your only data on not drinking comes from the times you wanted a drink and could not get one, and you project that one uncomfortable hour across the rest of your life. Ellen Biggs spent years doing exactly that, certain not drinking would be unbearable, while overlooking that the cycle was already unbearable and simply familiar. The choice was never hard versus easy. The choice is which hard has an end.

What settles it is data rather than motivation. Every stretch of alcohol-free days gives you something real to compare against, and it is the only evidence that answers it. Ellen's verdict, once she had enough of it: her life was more manageable without alcohol, and for someone who dislikes doing hard things, not drinking was the least expensive option on the table. Moderation, the sensible-sounding middle path, was the most expensive of the three.

The hard part also ends, which is what the cycle never offers. Research cited on the episode puts a craving at roughly twenty minutes. Two or three strong ones on a bad day is an hour out of twenty-four, and each one you ride out makes the next one cheaper. Do you have a drinking problem if nobody else is getting hurt? Why that test gives a wrong answer.

There is a test you run on your own drinking, and it has nothing to do with how much you drink. It goes: is anyone else getting hurt? Nobody is complaining, the job is fine, you have never endangered anyone. Test passed. Jonathan Ball and Ellen Biggs take that test apart, because it is built to return the wrong answer.

Outward harm is the last thing to show up and the least reliable thing to measure. Ellen drank a bottle of wine a night for years without a single person raising it with her, and spent those same years awake at three in the morning asking what was wrong with her. Nobody complaining is not evidence that you are okay. It only means the people around you are being spared, which was the point of the performance.

Look at what you build to keep that performance running. After one uncomfortable night at a work event, Ellen made a firm rule about never behaving that way again. It worked. It also meant she stopped wanting to go to work events and drank more at home. That is what a guardrail is really for. It kept the drinking safe by heading off the incident that might have made somebody say something out loud.

The same instinct shows up as protecting people from your struggle. Jonathan kept how bad it had been from his wife for years and called it sparing her. What he built was a wall she could feel and could not name. When he finally told her, she handled it fine. What hurt her was having been kept out of it.

Your own experience is enough. You do not need a witness to it and you do not need it to get worse first. Try this the next time someone close to you is in a mood: pause, notice the story you just attached to it, and then just ask. Ellen finds that nine times out of ten it has nothing to do with her.

Why 30 days off alcohol proves you can stop and tells you almost nothing else.

Thirty days off proves you can stop. It says nothing about why you started again on the thirty-first, and that second question is the one that decides how your next year goes. If you have finished a Dry January and felt mostly relief that it was over, you already know the difference.

Jonathan Ball and Ellen Biggs draw a distinction that changes the whole project: alcohol is a solution rather than the problem. It is fast, reliable and always available, and it answers being tired, stressed, lonely, bored or short on celebration. That is exactly why it is hard to put down. It also happens to be a poor solution, and quietly accepting a poor one is what stops you going out to find better ones.

Research cited on the episode puts physical clearance at 10 to 14 days. Past that point your last drink is out of your system, sleep starts returning, and the biological side of the fight is largely closed. What remains is wiring: years of pairing dates, deals, Fridays and hard conversations with a glass. Ellen Biggs's point is that two weeks in is where the useful work begins.

Expect to be bad at it for a while. What happens to your relationships when you stop drinking, and why the fear is usually wrong.

If you have put off changing your drinking because of what it might do to the people around you, that fear is doing more work than it has earned. The worry is rarely the drink itself. It is that saying no to the glass will land as saying no to the relationship, the tradition, the memory you built around it.

Jonathan Ball's antidote is a phrase worth sitting with: become sacredly selfish. It means becoming the source of your own needs, taking responsibility for your own experience, and putting down the job of managing everyone else's mood. Most of us picked up mood-managing early, in a house where reading the room worked, and Ellen Biggs makes the case that it outlived its usefulness decades ago. The shape-shifting is what eats your self-worth, and the drinking sits on top of it as fake self-care.

Ellen Biggs, two and a half years alcohol-free, expected to lose the friends she drank with. What she got was one awkward exchange at a birthday party and a run of people telling her they were relieved, because they had been drinking more than they wanted around her. Jonathan Ball expected his choice to cost his marriage its celebrations. It bought the marriage better conversations.

You cannot argue anyone into freedom. You can only be visibly free in front of them. Jonathan Ball spent the first year of an earlier alcohol-free stretch evangelizing, and it moved nobody. Tending your own house and letting people notice does the work preaching never did, and it happens to be the version of you they wanted all along.

Try it as a thought experiment before it has to be a decision. What would secretly selfish look like in your week? How would you show up differently? Which resentments would fall away? Write the answers down. And if you are the one who never asks, ask someone for help this week, because being needed is a good gift to hand someone who loves you.

Why do I drink? The honest answer usually sits a few layers under the one you'd give.

You already have a reason for drinking, and it probably sounds reasonable. It takes the edge off. It makes you easier in a room. Those answers are true enough to say out loud and thin enough that they never lead anywhere, which is how you can hold one for years and still drink more than you meant to.

Alcohol is a symptom, and the reason you drink is almost never the reason you give. Affective Liminal Psychology, the method Jonathan Ball and Ellen Biggs trained in through This Naked Mind, sorts the beliefs holding a drinking habit in place into three layers: substance, society, and self. Substance is what you believe about the drink, society is what you believe it does for you around other people, and self is the layer that keeps you stuck, because that is where you decided you were not fun, confident, or open enough on your own and handed those jobs to a chemical.

Ellen Biggs was 50 when she first looked at this, with 35 years of patterning behind her, and the exercise that opened it up was two lists: everything you drink for, and everything you fear if you stop. That inventory gives you beliefs to test one at a time, and testing them is what ends the wanting rather than just the drinking.

The question you ask matters too. Most people ask what is wrong with me, and a brain handed that question will answer it: you are lazy, you have no willpower, your family was always like this. Jonathan Ball's reframe is to ask questions that have somewhere to go. Why does effort pay off everywhere else in my life but here? What if alcohol works this way in every human body and nothing about me is broken?

Start with the two lists. Take one belief and ask where you first learned it. Keep a destination in view while you work, because a picture of what opens up when the argument stops pulls harder than any rule you set on a Monday.

How to celebrate a birthday without alcohol, and what actually counts as a treat instead

Ellen turned 55 last week. It was her third alcohol-free birthday. She and Jonathan Ball spend this episode taking apart one of the stickiest beliefs in drinking culture: that alcohol is a treat, and that a celebration needs it to count.

Ellen walks through all three years. The first one she was scared of, so she made one rule, nothing off limits except the alcohol, and loaded the day with mocktails, alcohol-free champagne, cake, ice cream, everything she actually wanted. It worked. By year two the old pathway lit up briefly and she noticed it without following it. By year three alcohol was not on her radar at all, and the thing she had to question instead was a family tradition she had never once examined. The same chocolate mint cake for 50 years. A dinner out, because that is what you do.

Jonathan shares the birthday he decided to elevate with champagne and felt nothing. He was doing it so often that the special occasion version had stopped being special. That is the mechanism worth understanding. A reward you claim most nights has quietly become a routine wearing a reward's clothes.

What if the fear of missing out is not really about missing out at all?

In this episode of The Alcohol Myth Podcast, Jonathan Ball and Ellen Beggs explore the myth that if you stop drinking, you will always feel like you are missing out.

FOMO can feel so convincing when you are changing your relationship with alcohol. Weddings, vacations, date nights, parties, dancing, celebrations, fancy dinners, and nights out can all seem like they will lose their magic without a drink in your hand.
