  • Episode 73: How Mental Health Impacts Us - Brandi Garza, LPC
The ALL ME® Podcast How Mental Health Impacts Us – Brandi Garza, LPC The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that 16.2 million U.S. adults had at least one major depressive episode in 2016. This represents 6.7 percent of the U.S. adult population. Depression is most common in ages 18 to 25 (10.9 percent) and in individuals belonging to two or more races (10.5 percent). What are the primary factors that are contributing to the mental health issues and illness found in adults? Is there a link between too much social media use and an increased risk for mental health illness? Can counseling improve outcomes and our mental state? These are the questions we discuss with Brandi Garza, a Licensed Professional Counselor, who works a variety of individuals to help them overcome their daily struggles. About Brandi Garza, LPC At 11 years old, Brandi Garza declared therapy to be hers! As a person adopted at 13 years old, she has the unique lens of living on "both sides of the tracks". Brandi lived an experience as a child of parents in poverty, with addiction, and severe mental illness. She attributed her very survival to those that leaned into their humanity to truly see her. Over the last 18 years in the mental health field, she can sum up her purpose in those three words. She is most joyous and at peace in her work when she has guided a human being to be seen. Parents "seeing" their children, peers, colleagues, siblings, scholars to staff, or in the most precious sessions to "see" the self. As a first-generation high school graduate, UTD college graduate, mother, adoptee, proud pan woman, Brandi has been given some unique perspectives that allow her as a therapist and employee to be an expert empathizer. Her work with shelters, juveniles, urban communities, the world of addiction and so much more has only strengthened her belief that we are all human beings have a human experience begging to be seen. Brandi truly believes that we all have our answer within ourselves. It is not a clinician that gives it to you but rather a counselor that unveils it with you through kindness, authenticity, and love. Those are not to be confused with timid or weak. It takes great strength in a relationship between client and counselor to charge through the barriers to one's happiness. • Episode 68: High Risk Supplements: The Death of Soldier - Leanne Sparling
The ALL ME® Podcast High Risk Supplements: The Death of a Soldier – Leanne Sparling Most of us have walked into a vitamin store, health food store or even the local grocery and have walked the isle where Dietary Supplements are on the shelfs. What most people don't realize is that the Dietary Supplement industry as a whole does have a lack of regulation. As a result of this lack of regulation many people have gotten sick or have even died as a result of illegal drugs and banned substances found in these products. In this interview we talk with Leanne Sparling who like most Mom's out there didn't think that it was a big deal that her son had been using a product that he had purchased at a national dietary supplement chain. In fact, she thought to herself, of course is has to be okay if my kid could walk into the store and purchase it over the counter. Leanne has a heartbreaking story that she is going to share in this podcast and it's a story about how her son Michael, who was just graduated from boot camp, had a heart attack as a result of a product he was taking. She will share with us that her son was using a product manufactured by USP Labs, in Dallas, TX. At the time this product was one of the hottest products on the market. Pronounced "Jacked" or "Jack 3D" Jacked had an ingredient in the product called DMAA (1,3-Dimethylamylamine) which according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is an amphetamine derivative that has been marketed in sports performance and weight loss products, many of which are sold as dietary supplements. DMAA is not a dietary ingredient, and DMAA-containing products marketed as dietary supplements are illegal and their marketing violates the law. For more information on DMAA please visit: https://www.fda.gov/food/dietary-supplement-products-ingredients/dmaa-products-marketed-dietary-supplements Today, Leanne and her family continue to share Michael's tragic stories in hopes that no other family will have to go through what they went through. Her advice to parents when it comes to dietary supplements is to do your research and take products that are 3rd Party Certified by NSF Certified for Sport. You can find more information about them by visiting their website: https://www.nsfsport.com/ Thank you for tuning in and using some of the resources below to help keep you and your family safe.
