Five years ago, Baker Mayfield was the first pick in the NFL Draft. Saquon Barkley was the second pick. Lamar Jackson was the last player selected in the first round. The Colts hit a home run...but at what expense? Robert Mays and Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr look back at that draft, and how it can be instructive this year and in the future, on this episode of The Athletic Football Show.

Quarterbacks get all the attention in the NFL, and understandably so. But young signal callers don't succeed or fail on their own. They need the right infrastructure around them to become the player the teams drafting them believe they can be. So...what is that infrastructure? Robert Mays, Nate Tice, Derrik Klassen dig into the importance of pass-catchers, offensive lines and playcallers for young QBs, with lessons from recent history, on this episode of The Athletic Football Show.

The NFL schedule is demanding. So demanding, in fact, that someone who covers it as closely and passionately as, say, Robert Mays, doesn't have a ton of time to pay attention to college football. So on this episode of The Athletic Football Show, Robert turns to two of The Athletic's pillars of college football and NFL Draft knowledge, Andy Staples and Nick Baumgardner, for a much-needed education. It's the Idiot's Guide to the 2023 NFL Draft.
