Over the weekend, the IEC held its second voter registration weekend with the first round being last year in November. The turnout during the voter registration weekend seemed to be a positive one which indicates a strengthening participatory democracy, where citizens have realised their power to bring about change by registering to vote. To tell us more about this, we are joined by Terry Tselane, Executive Chairman of the Institute of Election Management services in Africa.

4th February is commemorated as World Cancer Day around the globe. Cancer is all around us and around 10 million people die each year from cancer. Experts project that cancer deaths would have risen to 13 million by 2030, if we don't act. In South Africa, over 100 000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year. To talk to us about the importance of screening and what the latest data on cancer is saying were joined by Dr Noluthando Nematswerani, Chief Clinical Officer at Discovery Health.

In an area that is riddled with violence and lack of hope, one woman refuses to give up on her community. Lack of police will, and lack of government assistance doesn’t not shudder her hope and dreams for a better community and so she chooses to rise above what surrounds her and decides to give back to her community by creating an organisation that educates, offer alternatives and support to her neighbours. Tha organisation is called umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu and Nicole Trom and Steve Bok opened a community-based organisation tackle the social ills of the community and focus on learning, education, training and development. Featuring 24 nations after a qualifying campaign involving 54 teams, AFCON has expanded in size while simultaneously reaching a wider audience with it's biennial events – a far cry from its origins more than 60 years ago.
