Many people think a simple, one-page document is all they need to transfer ownership of their worldly possessions to their heirs.

Some even go so far as to rely on the pre-printed will forms you can buy at your local stationery shop or download.

While there is a strong case to be made for keeping things simple and uncomplicated, it is possible to oversimplify and in so doing so, make life a whole lot more complicated for your heirs.

Growing numbers of South African parents are looking at international education opportunities for their children, but this does not come cheap.

While some parents are no strangers to putting aside money for schooling, with top private schools costing over R250 000 per year, the leap to an R800 000 annual price tag for tuition and living costs at the likes of Harvard is sizeable.

“While the cost of studying abroad is high, the return on investment is much higher. Just as top schools carry prestige and sway for employment in South Africa, so too do globally top-ranked universities. The average starting salary for a Harvard graduate is around R70 000 per month.

The last Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) in 2016 found that 78% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa can't read for meaning in any language. 

South Africa was placed last out of the 50 countries assessed. 

This is a national crisis.  If children can't read, they can't learn.

On January 1 one of the key amendments of the Labour Relations Amendment Act of 2018 came into effect.
